| Team McCarthy upsets Team Hizey 10-9 in TALL fall ball championship Coffman and Ham combine for 8 goals in comeback win; Clausen has six for Hizey
Oct. 24, 2002
7:00 p.m. Championship game: Team McCarthy 10, Team Hizey 9
Team McCarthy, the number 2 seed in the TALL fall ball playoffs, upset Team Hizey 10-9 on the strength of five goals by Cory Coffman, making a rare visit from football practice, for a comeback win that gave Coach Sean McCarthy his second TALL championship in a row.
Also scoring for McCarthy were Owen Ham with three goals and one assist, Graham McGinnis with a goal and an assist, R.J. Crumpler with a goal and Pat Schultz with an assist. Goalies Mark Peck (playing the first, second and fourth quarters) had three saves for McCarthy and Ryan Webb, playing the third quarter had one save.
For Coach Sean Hizey, standout goalie Zach Brewer had 15 saves, several of them the spectacular variety, but still got the loss. Top scorer for Hizey was Ben Clauson with six goals and one assist, Kevin O'Connor with a goal and an assist, and J.P. Trehy and Jay Whitaker each with a goal.
Team McCarthy found themselves down at every turn but the last. After one period Team Hizey led 3-2, at the half Hizey led 5-3, at the end of three Hizey led 8-5, but Team McCarthy turned it on in the final period, outscoring Team Hizey 5-1 to win it by 1, 10-9.
In that last period, Coffman would not be denied, scoring three of his five goals unassisted on tenacious drives to the net. Team Hizey's defense knew what was coming -- Coffman rolls right and fires -- but they couldn't stop him. Also scoring in that key final period were Ham on a McGinnis assist and McGinnis on a Ham assist.
Team Hizey jumped to a quick lead as the game began when Kevin O'Connor scored on an Andy DeLamielleure assist 1:25 into the game. But a little more than a minute later Ham fired over Brewer's left shoulder to make it 1-1. Jay Whitaker then scored for Hizey, followed by Crumpler for McCarthy to knot it at 2-2. Then Clauson scored from his favorite spot -- 10 yards out and a bit to the goalie's left -- to make it 3-2 at the first break.
Clauson did a quick repeat at the beginning of the second period on a DeLamelleure feed to make it 4-2 in Hizey's favor. And when Team McCarthy was penalized for an off sides, Team Hizey took advantage of the man-up as Clauson scored again, this time on an O'Connor feed, to make it 5-2. A goal by Ham for Team McCarthy, this one on a Pat Schultz assist, made it 5-3 at the halftime break.
Not much had been heard of Coffman, who seemed to be finding his lacrosse legs after a season of football. But as the third period began he scored unassisted 3:50 into the period to pull Team McCarthy to within a goal, 5-4. Trehy answered for Hizey on a Clauson assist to make it 6-4 at the 6:30 mark. That's when goalie Brewer made three straight saves, one of them a stuff of an Owen Ham shot, to keep the score at 6-4.
But Coffman, getting the feel at last, scored unassisted again to make it 6-5 with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. But consecutive goals by Clauson at the 12:40 and the 13:20 mark, one unassisted and one assisted by DeLamielleure, made it 8-5. A power save by Brewer on a Coffman fast ball as the time ran out kept the score at 8-5.
There is no record of what Coach McCarthy told his team at the last break, but it worked. The McCarthyites reeled off five unanswered goals to make it 10-8 with seven minutes remaining. Ham scored on a McGinnis assist at 2:29, then three by Coffman unassisted at 5:20, 6:47 and 9:18, and finally by McGinnis on a Ham assist at 11:08.
Team Hizey scored its final goal at 12:30 as Clauson scored unassisted to make it 10-9, setting up a furious six final minutes during which Team McCarthy seemed to be doing all it could to let Team Hizey back in the game. With five minutes to go Team McCarthy was called for being in the crease and lost the ball. Then, with three minutes to go Team McCarthy was called for an off sides and earned a 30-second penalty that they managed to kill. And then, with 1:05 left, team McCarthy was called for failure to advance, again relinquishing the ball.
Staunch defense, especially by McCarthy's Bryan Thompson, kept the Hizey sharpshooters from getting a good shot, however. And with 50 seconds remaining, Team Hizey threw the ball out of bounds. They got the ball back quickly, though, but with 30 seconds remaining they were called for an illegal pick.
Coach McCarthy called a time out with 30 seconds remaining but, as play resumed, they were called for illegal procedure, giving Team Hizey yet another chance to force overtime. The McCarthy defense got the ball back with 20 seconds left, but lost it again with 12 seconds remaining. McCarthy goalie Peck registered a save with 12 seconds remaining and the McCarthyites managed to run out the clock on this exciting Battle of the Seans.

In the night's second game, the Plumerians seemed to have run out of gas in making their way to the first semifinal game. They were bombed 12-1 by Team Hizey, the top seeded squad. Scoring for Hizey in the first half were J.P. Trehy from Andy DeLamielleure, Jay Whitaker also from DeLamielleure, Ben Clauson unassisted, Clauson on an assist by Michael Simel, two consecutive by Trehy unassisted and one by Adam Bolt unassisted to make it 8-0 at the break.
It was more of the same in the second half. Mike Homlish scored unnassisted to make it 9-0, followed by a Chris Boyle score unassisted for Team Plumer to make it 9-1. Three more for Team Hizey closed out the game. Trehy scored again usassisted, Homlish scored on a Kevin O'Connor feed and Andy DeLamielleure scored unassisted to make the final score 12-1.
In the night's final game, Team McCarthy, which has played one less game than the other four teams due to missing two games due to rain instead of one, dominated early against Team Estacio, running to 5-1 lead in the first half, and held on to win the second semifinal 8-5.
Scoring for Team McCarthy in the first half were Owen Ham on an Evan Shearer assist, Steven Sharpe on a Pat Schultz assist, and three unassisted goals by Ham. A single goal by Team Estacio, by Jack Craig unassisted, made it 5-1 at the end of the first half.
In the final period, Team Estacio's Bob Tauchen scored unassisted while the Estacio squad was down a man after a flagrant slash penalty (non-releaseable) to make it 5-2. Hans Almekinders answered quickly for Team McCarthy, scoring unassisted, to make it 6-2. Stephen Barksdale scored in an Owen Ham assist to make it 7-2 with 13 minutes left, and Pat Schultz scored on an Evan Shearer assist to make it 8-2 with five minutes remaining.
Team Estacio wasn't quitting, however, scoring the game's three final goals while milking the clock in the waning moments. Colin Rossi scored for Estacio at the 21:20 mark to close the gap to 8-3, then Joe Howard scored unassisted with just over a minute remaining to makie it 8-4. Howard scored again unassisted as the buzzer sounded to end the game at 8-5.

| Team Hizey downs Team Estacio 11-4; Team Gordon edges Team Plumer 12-11
Oct. 17, 2002
6:30 p.m. game: Team Gordon 12, Team Plumer 11
Team Hizey solidified its first-place standing on Thursday, Oct. 17 with an 11-4 win over Team Estacio, and Team Gordon edged into a third-place tie by defeating Team Plumer 12-11 in an exciting game that was, thankfully, devoid of precipitation.
Thursday's games came after a week's delay due to wet fields. Tuesday's games (McCarthy v. Plumer and Gordon v. Hizey) and Wednesday's game (Estacio v. McCarthy) were postponed due to the weather and will be made up next Tuesday and Wednesday. This will require other schedule changes which will be announced on this Web site as soon as they are available.
In Thursday's first game, the matchup between Gordon and Plumer was a tight one all the way. At the end of the first period the score was tied 2-2. Scoring for Plumer were Jon Koritz on a Shane Nouri assist and Andy Ross on a Dwight Weld assist. For Gordon it was Rob McNaughton from Graham Georges and Georges unassisted on a fast break.
The second period was nearly as close with the score at 5-4 in favor of Plumer at the half. Scoring for Plumer in the second period were Drew Gardner, Koritz and Nouri, all unassisted. For Gordon, scoring were Will Lewis unassisted and Nick Woods on a McNaughton assist.
The Gordonians tied the game 5-5 early in the third period on another unassisted goal by Georges. Then the Plumeranians regained the lead 6-5 seven minutes into the period on an unassisted Gardner goal. That's when Team Gordon blitzed Team Plumer with five straight goals to go ahead 10-6 at the end of three periods. Scoring for Gordon in that spurt were Brian Moran on an Alex Elkins assist, Moran unassisted, McNaughton on a Moran assist, McNaughton on a Frank Dembowski assist and Georges again unassisted.
Team Plumer scored a quick two goals (Grier Allison on a Nouri assist and Chris Boyle on a Ross assist) in the fourth period to close the score to 10-8. Will Lewis answered for Gordon a minute later on a Georges assist to make it 11-8. Another two goals by Plumer, Ross from Dwight Weld and Weld unassisted, made it 11-10. It was Georges again unassisted to scored to pull Gordon away to a 12-10 lead, but Nouri answered on a Ross assist with a minute remaining on the game to make it 12-11. Time ran out on Team Plumer as they attempted to tie the score and force an overtime.
In the night's second game, Team Hizey won 11-4 over Team Estacio, though the first period gave every indication of the game being a close one. Hizey had a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period on two goals by Ben Clauson, one unassisted and one on a feed from Ben Harris. Ryan Fisher scored unassisted for Estacio to make it 2-1 at the break.
Team Estacio went completely cold in the next two periods, getting very few shots on goal. On the other side of the field, Team Hizey put up nine goals, making it 11-1 at the end of three periods. Scoring for Hizey in the second and third periods were Clauson, Adam Bolt, J.P. Trehy and Trevor Robinson all unassisted, four straight goals by Jay Whitaker, two unassisted and two assisted by Mike Homlish, and Clauson from Andy DeLamielleure for Team Hizey's final goal of the game to make it 11-1.
In the fourth period Team Estacio's offense began to penetrate and the scored showed it. They scored three goals in that period after being blanked for the previous two. Bob Tauchen scored two on assists from Joe Howard and Colin Rossi, and Howard had one unassisted, to make the final score 11-4.

| Team Hizey takes lead in standings in slosh fest; Team Gordon gets second win
Oct. 10, 2002
6:30 p.m. game: Team Gordon 6, Team Estacio 5
It was lightly drizzling as Teams Estacio and Gordon took the field at 6 :30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, but by the time Teams Hizey and McCarthy finished up at 9 p.m. the Riverside lacrosse practice field resembled a wetland. It's a wonder the Sierra Club didn't swoop in to claim it for some endangered mollusk or waterfowl.
Speaking of foul, that certainly describes the conditions in which Team Hizey took the fall ball standings lead with a 7-3 win over Team McCarthy, and Team Gordon got a second win, this one 6-5 on a last-second goal against Team Estacio.
Team Estacio ran out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Cody Kelly unassisted, Matthew Alijero unassisted and Jack Craig on an Alijero assist. Kyle Rooney had the only goal for Team Gordon early in the period to make it 3-1 at the first break.
Team Gordon had one goal in the second period to narrow the Estacio lead to 3-2. Scoring was Conor Buckley unassisted for Team Gordon in that period. Gordon goalie Brian Ring had four of his five saves in that period to keep Team Estacio from moving out to a bigger lead.
The teams traded a goal apiece in the third period, Cody Kelly scoring unassisted for Estacio and Brian Jobe scoring on a coast-to-coast run (one of two on the night) to make it 4-3 in favor of Estacio as the fourth period began.
Estacio goalie Tim McCord had three big saves early in the period to keep Team Gordon out of the net, but finally, with five minutes left in regulation, Brian Moran scored on a Will Lewis assist to tie the game 4-4. But Joe Howard answered quickly for Team Estacio to put the Estacians back up 5-4.
With 3:40 remaining in the game Jobe again went the length of the field and scored to tie the game at 5-5. Coach Scott Gordon called a time out with 18 seconds left to set up a play, and with only 8 seconds left in the game Will Lewis passed to an open Lee Beacham who put the ball into the net for the win. Team Gordon's record is now 2-4 and Team Estacio falls to 3-3.
By the time that game had ended the rain had really begun to fall, but it was not yet puddling on the field. A decision was made to go with two 25-minute running-clock halves to try to get people home early.
Team McCarthy scored first when R.J. Crumpler scored three minutes into the half on a Hans Almekinders assist to make it 1-0 McCarthy. The Owen Ham scored unassisted on a drive through deepening puddles to make it 2-0. Two quick answers by Team Hizey tied the game when J.P. Trehy and Ben Clauson each scored unassisted.
At the 22-minute mark Almekinders scored on a Ham assist to make it 3-2 in favor of McCarthy, but a minute later Trehy scored on a Jay Whitaker assist to tie the game 3-3 at the half.
At this point the few faithful parents and lacrosse nuts were looking for an ark to come floating over the horizon. The field was a glistening lake in the diesel lights and every step by a running player brought up a a waist-high sheet of water. A decision was made to have a 15-minute running clock half instead of the planned 25 minutes.
Twenty seconds into the half, Clauson scored for Team Hizey to make it 4-3, followed by another Clauson goal on an Adam Bolt assist to make it 5-3. Team McCarthy couldn't get a break in the muck. They had two extra-man chances but couldn't get anything going in the downpour.
But Team Hizey managed to somehow find a way, with Trehy and Andy DeLamielleure scoring unassisted in the last five minutes to make the final score 7-3. McCarthy's record falls to 4-2 while Hizey's improves to 5-1 and his team moves into the lead of the fall ball standings.

| Team Hizey defeats Team Plumer 9-2 to run record to 4-1
Oct. 9, 2002
7:00 p.m. game: Team Hizey 9, Team Plumer 2
Team Hizey moved into a tie for the lead in the 2002 fall ball standings on Wednesday, Oct. 9, with a 9-2 win over Team Plumer, which saw its record drop to 1-5.
Team Hizey managed three goals in the first period while Team Plumer couldn't get on the board. Scoring for Hizey were Kevin O'Connor, Ben Clauson and Jay Whitaker, all unassisted. It could have been worse had it not been for four saves in the quarter by Plumer goalie Adam Canoy, who had eight saves on the night.
In the second period Team Plumer was again blanked as Team Hizey managed a single goal by Ben Harris unassisted to make it 4-0 at the half. Canoy added two more saves in that period.
Team Hizey scored four goals in the third period (Andy DeLamielleure, Harris, Mike Homlish and Clauson, all unassisted) to make it 8-0 after three periods. Hizey goalie Zach Brewer was pitching a shutout with four saves after 54 minutes of running-clock play.
In the final period Team Plumer outscored Team Hizey 2-1, but that wasn't nearly enough to close the gap. By this time the Hizanians had switched positions, long sticks moving to middie and attack and short sticks playing defense. That gave d-man Brian Farmer a chance to score a goal for Hizey while running middie to make it 9-0. His goal would be the last for Team Hizey.
A minute later Shane Nouri scored on an Andy Ross assist in a man-up situation to make it 9-1, and then Reid Kohl scored unassisted to make it 9-2, the final score.
Team Hizey tried some skullduggery with about three minutes left when goalie Brewer sprinted to midfield to take a pass from an attackman and, presumably, get a shot off. But the pass was too high. Still Brewer remained at the offensive end for nearly two minutes, even getting a shot on goal, which went wide, before Coach Sean Hizey moved him back to his own goal.
Coach Hizey, apparently wanting to match some chicanery last week by Coach Scott Gordon, early in the game called a play that required Andy DeLamielleure to feign injury, which he did to great effect, causing many spectators to think he had possibly broken a limb.
The plan was for a long pole to move onto the offensive side of the field on the run and take a pass to score, but Coach Kirkley pointed out to Hizey that faking an injury is illegal and referee Rick Wooten put a stop to the funny business.
As it turned out, Team Hizey didn't need trickery to put this one in the win column.

| Team Estacio racks up big numbers over Plumer; McCarthy gets by Gordon
Oct. 8, 2002
6:30 p.m. game: Team Estacio 19, Team Plumer 3
Team McCarthy ran its fall ball record to 4-1 with a 7-5 win over Team Gordon and Team Estacio moved to 3-2 with a 19-3 win over Team Plumer on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
What ended up a rout began with Team Plumer actually leading after one period. On the strength of Shane Nouri's goal on a Mark Gardner assist midway through the period, and with Team Estacio seeming to play between the restraining lines, Team Plumer took a 1-0 lead into the second period. But that's when the close game ended.
Team Estacio reeled off seven goals in the second period after being blanked in the first. Tim Gregory, just moved over to Estacio from Team Estacio to "even things up," scored first for the Estacians, with Jack Craig following on a Cody Kelly assist. Kelly added two unassisted of his own, and Craig added two more on assists from Stuart Bell and Joe Howard. Team Plumer managed two goals in the period from Andy Ross and Shane Nouri, both unassisted, to make it 7-3 at the half.
And the blitz wasn't over. The Estacians added six more in the third period to the Plumerians' none. Scoring for Estacio were Bob Tauchen from Andy Ross, Kelly three times unassisted, Elliot McDonald unassisted and Gregory unassisted when a pass went into the goal. Ross added the final goal of the period on a feed from Craig to make it 13-3 at the end of three.
Team Estacio added another six in the final period, again to Team Plumer's none. Scoring four straight for Estacio was Colin Rossi, two on assists from Craig, one from Bill Hayes and one from John Hayes. Ben Tucker and Tim Gregory added the final two scores unassisted to make the final score 19-3.
In the night's final game Team McCarthy and Team Gordon were locked at 1-1 at the end of the first period, with d-man Bryan Thompson scoring unassisted for McCarthy and Will Lewis scoring on a Nick Woods assist for Team Gordon.
Team McCarthy added three goals in the second period to Team Gordon's none to make it 4-1 at the half. Scoring for McCarthy in that period were R.J. Crumpler, Owen Ham and Pat Schultz, all unassisted.
In the third period, Ham opened the scoring on a Steven Sharpe assist to make it 5-1, followed by a Will Lewis score on a Lee Beacham feed to make it 5-2. Ham scored unassisted at the 12-minute mark to make it 6-2 in favor of McCarthy as the third period ended.
Team Gordon outscored Team Estacio 3-1 in the final period but it was too little too late. Scoring for Gordon in the final period were Beacham from Lewis, Woods from Lewis and Rob McNaughton from Woods. Scoring for McCarthy in the final period was Owen Ham unassisted.

| Team Gordon gets first win 11-9 over Plumer; McCarthy over Estacio 12-8
Oct. 3, 2002
6:30 p.m. game: Team McCarthy 12, Team Estacio 8
Team Gordon got its first win of the fall ball season on Thursday, Oct. 3, defeating Team Plumer 11-9 in a match that was close all the way. In the night's early game, Team McCarthy ran its record to 3-1 with a 12-8 win over Team Estacio.
Coach Scott Gordon used a bit of trickery in the waning seconds of the first half, calling a timeout and setting up an isolation play. With just five seconds remaining in the half, Nick Woods hit Graham Georges with a pass from behind the goal, which Georges put in the goal to break a 4-4 tie and give Gordon a 5-4 lead at the half.
Earlier, as the game began, Shane Nouri put Team Plumer on top early with a goal on an assist from Andy Ross to make it 1-0. But Team Gordon struck back with three straight goals from Will Lewis on a Nick Woods assist, unassisted from Brian Moran and unassisted from Woods. Woods ended the game with three goals and three assists.
Joey Pietrantano scored on a Dwight Weld assist with two minutes remaining in the first period to make it 3-2 in Team Gordon's favor at the end of the first period. Both teams added two goals each in the second period to make it 5-4 in favor of the Gordonians at the half. Nouri scored unassisted and Ross scored on a Pietrantano assist for the Plumerians, while Woods scored unaided and Graham Georges scored on the sneaky Woods assist for Gordon. Gordon goalie Brian Ring had two of his six saves in that period.
The teams again matched each other, scoring three each in the third period. Scoring for Plumer were Chris Boyle, Nouri and Pietrantano, all unassisted. Scoring for Gordon were Alvin Black, Moran and Lee Beacham, all unassisted, to make it 8-7 in Gordon's favor as the final period began.
Boyle scored unassisted to tie the game at 8-8, then Anthony Howard scored on a sweet feed from Woods to make it 9-8 in favor of Gordon. Dwight Weld tied the game up at 9-9 on a Nouri assist with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Plumerians nearly scored to go ahead but goalie Brian Ring made a big one-on-one save on a Dwight Weld shot to preserve the tie with seven minutes remaining.
Anthony Howard scored unassisted with three minutes remaining to make it 10-9 in favor of Gordon. A Woods goal on a Will Lewis feed with two minutes remaining made it 11-9, but it took three huge saves by Ring in the last minute-and-a-half to preserve the win for Gordon, their first of the season. Team Gordon is now 1-3 and Team Plumer is also 1-3.
In the night's early game Team McCarthy defeated Team Estacio 12-8. The game began as an all-Riverside affair when Owen Ham and Cory Coffman teamed up for the game's first two goals. Coffman fed Ham a minute into the game to make it 1-0 in favor of Team McCarthy, and Ham returned the favor two minutes later as Coffman scored on a Ham assist to make it 2-0.
After Estacio goalie Tim McCord took the ball the length of the field for an unassisted score of his own, Coffman fed Ham yet again to make it 3-1. Ham struck again three minutes later with an unassisted goal to make it 4-1 in favor of the McCarthyites at the end of the first period.
Team McCarthy struck for six goals in the second period to team Estacio's three to make it 10-4 at the half. Scoring for McCarthy in the second quarter were defenseman Bryan Thompson who scored after picking up the ball on a faceoff, Hans Almekinders unassisted, Cory Coffman unassisted with a rocket shot to the top of the net, Mark Anna unassisted, Evan Shearer unassisted and R.J. Crumpler unassisted. Scoring for Estacio in that period were Matthew Alijero unassisted, Bob Tauchen on a Paul Blackwell assist and Joe Howard unassisted.
After a halftime during which Chip Mayer showed off Brine's newest products, the Nitrous head, the Flip-Grip stick and SuperCrosse Gloves, at the scorer's table, the game got back under way with Team Estacio scoring two quick goals. Jon Reda scored on a Joe Howard assist to close the gap to 11-5, then Tauchen scored to make it 11-6. Between those two goals, McCord made two big saves to keep the McCarthy lead from growing. He ended the night with 10 saves.
Unassisted goals by Ham and Crumpler padded the McCarthy margin to 12-6 with two minutes left in the third period, and an unassisted Jack Craig goal pulled Team Estacio to 12-7 as the period ended.
Team McCarthy didn't score in the final period and Team Estacio could manage only one goal to make the final score 12-8. Team McCarthy is now 3-1 and Team Estacio is 2-2.

| Team Hizey defeats Team Estacio 7-4; Hizey now leads standings at 3-1
Oct. 2, 2002
7:00 p.m. game: Team Hizey 7, Team Estacio 4
Team Hizey dropped Team Estacio from the ranks of the unbeatens on Wednesday, Oct. 2, by a score of 7-4. Team Hizey now leads the standings at 3-1 while Team Estacio joins Team McCarthy at 2-1 on the season, with Team Plumer at 1-2 and Team Gordon -- plagued by key player no-shows -- at 0-3.
It was a slow start for both teams as only one goal was scored in the first period, and that by Ben Harris unassisted to put Team Hizey up 1-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter. The first-quarter shutout was due, in no small part, to the three saves by Hizey goalie Zach Brewer in that period. Team Estacio goalie Tim McCord registered two saves in the period.
Team Hizey scored two quick goals as the second period began, both unassisted goals by Ben Clauson, to make it 3-0 in Team Hizey's favor. Team Estacio's Nick Povia scored unassisted six minutes into the period to make it 3-1, which was the score at the half. McCord had three of his eight saves in that period and Brewer had two of his eight in the second quarter.
Both teams scored two goals in the third period to make it 5-3 at the end of the quarter. For Team Hizey, J.P. Trehy scored back-to-back goals in the space of a minute early in the quarter, and for Team Estacio Joe Howard and Jon Reda each scored unassisted. Brewer had one save in that period.
In the final period Team Hizey scored two goals to Team Estacio's one goal to make the final score 7-4. Scoring in that period for Hizey were Clauson on a Trehy assist and Kevin O'Connor unassisted. For Estacio, Joe Howard scored on a Bob Tauchen assist with two minutes remaining.
McCord had three more saves in the final period to end the game with eight, and Brewer had two saves to also bring his total to eight.

| Team Plumer upsets Team McCarthy; Team Hizey downs Team Gordon on Oct. 1
Oct. 1, 2002
6:30 p.m. game: Team Hizey 9, Team Gordon 4
Team Plumer pulled the big upset of the TALL fall ball season thus far on Tuesday, Oct. 1, defeating unbeaten Team McCarthy 10-8 in the nightcap game. In the early game, Team Hizey ran its record to 2-1 by defeating Team Gordon 9-4.
Team McCarthy ran out to a 2-0 lead on unassisted goals by Owen Ham and Evan Shearer and it looked like the Plumeranians were going to be soundly beaten for a third time. But very quickly Shane Nouri and Jeff Canoy scored on unassisted goals to tie the score by the end of the first period.
Ham scored another goal, this one on a Hans Almekinders assist to make it 3-2, but Team Plumer struck back on a Chris Boyle unassisted goal to tie the score. The teams traded goals during the rest of the half, with Almekinders scoring for McCarthy and Nouri scoring for Plumer to make it 4-4 at the half.
The third period McCarthy went up 6-4 on two unassisted goals by Robert Crumpler, but Team Plumer answered with three straight unassisted goals by Drew Gardner, Boyle and Nouri to make it 7-6 in favor of Plumer at the end of the third period.
Jeff Canoy scored on a Nouri feed as the fourth period began, to make it 8-6, and then Noah Lee scored on a Gardner assist to make it 9-6 with 12 minutes remaining. McCarthy goals by Brandon Mark and Crumpler made it 9-8, and it looked like Team Plumer was folding. But Jeff Canoy scored on a Jon Koritz feed with two minutes left to seal the game at 10-8 for Team Plumer's first win.
In the early game, Team Hizey led Team Gordon 3-1 at the end of the first period. | Team McCarthy wins its second game on Sept. 25, downing Team Gordon 11-3
Sept. 25, 2002
7:00 p.m. game: Team McCarthy 11, Team Gordon 3
Team McCarthy played for the second night in a row and won for the second time, defeating Team Gordon 11-3 and moving to 2-0. This was Team Gordon's first game and they join teams Hizey and Plumer at 1-0 in the standings. Team Estacio is 1-0.
The McCarthyites got off to a slow start, having only a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter after Pat Schultz scored on a feed from Cory Coffman. Team Gordon tied it up three minutes into the second period when Matt Gornto scored off a feed from Riverside teammate Kyle Rooney.
Team McCarthy went on a tear over the next eight minutes, scoring four unanswered goals with Cory Coffman involved in three of them. Scoring during that spurt were Steven Sharpe on an assist by Evan Shearer, Coffman on an unassisted behind-the-backer, Shearer on a feed from Coffman and T.L. Hutchins on another feed from Coffman. As time was running out in the half Team Gordon's William Lewis scored on an assist from Graham Georges to make it 5-2 at the break.
Team McCarthy outscored Team Gordon 2-0 in the third period, with Hans Almekinders scoring unassisted just 26 seconds into the quarter and Owen Ham scoring unassisted with 10:23 gone in the 18-minute, running-clock period to make it 7-2 at the end of three periods.
The story was much the same in the final period, with team McCarthy racking up four goals to Team Gordon's one. Chris White scored unassisted early in the period to pull the Gordonians closer at 7-3, but R.J. Crumpler of the McCarthyites answered back with an unassisted goal to make it 8-3.
Two straight goals by Ham, one on a Ben Reith assist and another on an Evan Shearer assist made it 10-3, and Almekinders closed the scoring out with a goal on a Graham McGinnis assist as the game ended.
Next up on Thursday night, Sept. 26, is Team Hizey vs. Team Plumer at 6:30 p.m. and Team Estacio vs. Team Gordon in the night cap. Team McCarthy has the night off.

| Team McCarthy and Team Estacio start season 1-0
Sept. 24, 2002
6:30 p.m. game: Team McCarthy 4, Team Hizey 1
Team McCarthy defeated Team Hizey 4-1 in a defensive battle on Tuesday night, and Team Estacio bombed Team Plumer 10-3 in the opening night of fall ball game competition.
In the night's first game, Team McCarthy opened a 2-1 lead after one quarter and goalie Mark Peck (with valuable assistance from Bryan Thompson) pitched a shutout the rest of the way for the 4-1 win. Scoring for Team McCarthy were Owen Ham with two goals and an assist, and Evan Shearer and Pat Schultz with one goal each. T.L. Hutchins and Graham McGinnis had an assist each for the McCarthyites. Team Hizey actually scored first when J.P. Trehy put one in the net unassisted 4:30 into the game, but that was the only goal for them.
Peck had 11 saves for Team McCarthy and was ably assisted by d-man Thompson in the final quarter when Peck was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty. Thompson donned the goalie gear and managed three saves during his stint between the pipes. Zach Brewer had 10 saves for Team Hizey.
In the night's second game, Team Estacio was too much for Team Plumer, at least on this first night of competition. Seven goals in the middle quarters gave Team Estacio its large lead and allowed them to coast the rest of the way. Scoring for Team Estacio were Cody Kelly, Bob Tauchen and Jon Reda each with two goals, and Rob Christensen, Elliott McDonald, Ryan Fisher and Colin Rossi each with one goal. Dwight Weld and Joe Howard each had an assist for Team Estacio. Team Plumer had no assists.
