  FALL BALL 2003: NINTH NIGHT
Three-way logjam at the top
Tate and Estacio win to tie McCarthy for first place
Posted at 12:10 a.m. Oct. 24, 2003

Teams Tate and Estacio both won on Thursday, Oct. 23, giving them each a 5-1 record identical to Team McCarthy's. Tate defeated Gordon 8-4 and Estacio (with Coach Glenn Estacio absent) defeated Team Bailey 13-7.

Now comes the hard part: figuring out who will be seeded No.1, No. 2 and No. 3 for next week's playoffs. All three teams lost to each other. Team Tate beat Team Estacio 8-5 but lost to McCarthy 11-3. Team McCarthy beat Team Tate but lost to Team Estacio 10-8. And Team Estacio defeated Team McCarthy 10-8 but lost to Team Tate 8-5.

It is uncertain how the figuring will be done, but if it went by goal differential, Team McCarthy has a plus-6 (won by 8, lost by 2) against the other two teams, Team Estacio has a minus-1 (won by 2, lost by 3) and Team Tate has a minus-5 (won by 3, lost by 8). If this system were used, McCarthy would be the No. 1 seed, Estacio the No. 2 and Tate the No. 3. Final decisions will be made by Coach Kirkley over the weekend and will be posted on this Web site.

[UPDATE: Turns out the figuring above was correct. McCarthy is the top seed, followed by Estacio, Tate, Gordon, Scout and Bailey.]

In Thursday's early game, Team Gordon scored in the first minute (Weld unassisted) but was held scoreless for the rest of the half by Team Tate, which scored three of its own (Trevor Robinson, Adam Ball, Phil Sloate, all unassisted) to make it 3-1 at the half.

Team Tate came out strong with three more unanswered goals in the first 14 minutes (R.J. Crumpler, Paul Reily and Will Laws, all unassisted) to make it 6-1. However, Gordon scored three unanswered of its own (Tim Woolley, Brian Moran from T.L. Hutchins and Chris White from Tim Woolley) to make it 6-4 with 13 minutes left.

But the Jordan team of Will Lewis and Michael Simel combined for the last two goals, first by Lewis unassisted and then by Simel on a Lewis feed with six seconds left in the game to make the final 8-4. Tate goalie Ryan Webb had seven saves in the game. Gordon goalie Brian Ring had nine saves.

In the late game on Thursday, Team Bailey gave Team Estacio fits for the first 35 minutes of the game, tying the game at 5-5 with one minute left in the first half. Team Estacio scored two early goals (Joey Pietrantoni on an Al Mask assist, then Mask on a Pietrantoni assist) to make it 2-0. The Graham Georges made it 2-1 with an unassisted goal, followed quickly by an unassisted goal by Tony Mendes to put Team Estacio up 3-1.

Bob Kercher's worm-burner from 12 yards made it 3-2 but then Chris Ragazzo scored the first of his six goals on the night on a Mendes feed to make it 4-2 in Estacio's favor. Grier Allison scored for Bailey on a Brandon Marks assist to make it 4-3, but Ragazzo made it 5-3 with his second goal. Georges scored two unassisted in the final nine minutes to make the score 5-5 at the break.

Ragazzo scored again early to make it 6-5, and was answered a minute later by an unassisted goal by Kercher to tie the game at 6-6. Ragazzo again scored unassisted three minutes later, to be answered three more minutes later by a Grier Allison goal on a Jay Whitaker assist to tie it again at 7-7 with 21 minutes left in the game.

That's when the wheels came off for Team Bailey and the after-burners kicked in for Team Estacio. Team Estacio scored six unanswered goals (Ragazzo from Mask, Pietrantoni unassisted, Robert Tauchen unassisted, Ragazzo from John Hayes, John Hayes unassisted and finally Bill Hayes unassisted) to make the final score 13-7.

Team Estacio goalie Brad Acrey had four saves in the game. Team Bailey goalie Ryan Webb had five saves.

  FALL BALL 2003: EIGHTH NIGHT
McCarthy moves into first place
Estacio over Scout 8-7 in OT; Bailey falls to McCarthy 12-6
Posted at 11:30 p.m. Oct. 22, 2003

With one more night of regular-season games remaining, Team McCarthy moved into sole possession of first place on Wednesday, Oct. 22, with a 12-6 win over Team Bailey, but the heart-stopper of the night was Team Estacio's 8-7 overtime win over Team Scout.

If Team Tate and Team Estacio were to win tomorrow night in their final games all three team would have 4-1 records and there would be a three-way tie for first place. That, in itself, be a first for TALL fall ball. Seedings for the playoffs would then be determined by a combination of goal differentials, chicken bones and goat entrails.

However, on Wednesday night none of this was on the minds of the lacrosse fans at the Riverside practice field. Instead, when not cheering their favorite teams they were worrying about frostbite.

In the late game of the night, Team Scout got off to a roaring start as Rob Christensen scored two unassisted goals in the first five minutes to make it 2-0 in favor of Scout. Team Estacio added a goal five minutes later but Team Scout added two more to make it 4-1. Team Estacio closed the gap with two unassisted goals by Joey Pietrantoni before the half to make it 4-3 in Scout's favor.

A quick goal from Team Scout as the second half opened made it 5-3 but then Team Estacio reeled off four unanswered goals to make it 7-5 with two minutes remaining in the game. Christensen won the faceoff and scored on a Scott MacIver assist with 48 seconds left, then won the faceoff again and scored unassisted with 41 seconds left to tie the game 7-7 as regulation ended.

Five minutes into the overtime Pietrantoni scored unassisted to give Team Estacio the win 8-7.

Scoring for Team Estacio were Pietrantoni (3g, 1a), Bill Hayes (2g), Shane Nouri (1g, 1a), Al Mask (1g), Tony Mendes (1g) and Chris Ragazzo (1a). Scoring for Team Scout were Rob Christensen (4g, 1a), Jack Craig (2g) and MacIver (1g, 1a). Team Estacio goalie Brad Acrey had three saves while Team Scout goalie Brian Wisnowski had six saves.

In the early game, winless Team Bailey dominated Team McCarthy in the early going, grabbing a 4-2 lead with six minutes left in the first half on three goals by Graham Georges and one by Jay Whitaker on a Georges assist. Penalties hurt Team McCarthy, with two of those first-half goals coming while Team Bailey was man-up.

However, Team McCarthy found its shot and scored three unanswered in the last five minutes of the half to make it 5-4 McCarthy, with league-leading scorer Cody Kelly scoring two of those.

In the second half it was all McCarthy as they outscored Team Bailey 7-2 in the period to make the final score 12-6. Both of Team Bailey's second-half goals came in the man-up, giving them four extra-man goals on the night.

Scoring for Team McCarthy were Kelly (5g, 1a), Patrick Schultz (3g), Brandon Rabb (1g, 1a), Stephen Barksdale (1g, 1a), Hans Almekinders (1g) and Benjamin Feldman (1g). Scoring for Team Bailey were Georges (4g, 1a), Whitaker (1g) and Ben Richter (1g). Team Bailey goalie Ryan Webb had nine saves. Brad Smith and Max Cheatham split time in goal for Team McCarthy with Cheatham registering two saves.

Tate, McCarthy move to 4-1
Tate downs Scout 11-4, McCarthy edges Gordon 14-12
Posted at 11 p.m. Oct. 21, 2003

Teams Tate and McCarthy moved their records to 4-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 21, Tate by defeating Team Scout 11-4 and McCarthy by hanging on to defeat Gordon 14-12.

In the late game on Tuesday, Team Gordon scored 12 seconds in when Mark Anna won the faceoff and passed to Andy Ross to make it 1-0. But Team McCarthy answered with a blitz of its own as they scored four goals from right on the doorstep in a six-minute span to make it 4-1. Gordon answered with two to make it 4-3 but then McCarthy added two more to make it 6-3.

After another Gordon goal Team McCarthy scored three straight to make it 9-4 at the half, with Team McCarthy seemingly in control. But Team Gordon outscored Team Tate 6-4 in the first 25 minutes of the second half, three of those in man-up situations, to make it 13-10 with 10 minutes left.

Patrick Schultz scored on a Rob McNaughton assist for Team McCarthy to make it 14-0 with 6 minutes left but Alvin Black scored on a high leaper for Team Gordon with 3:30 left to make it 14-1. Ryan Meyer scored on a Ross assist for Team Gordon to make it 14-12 with a minute to go. Team Gordon won the faceoff but couldn't score as Team McCarthy goalie Brad Smith made two saves in the final minute of play.

In the most spectacular play of the night, Team Gordon's Cody Kelly, running for a loose ball near the box, fell and did a swan dive into about six inches of mud on the sideline. A wall of mud flew as his helmet filled with ooze before he stopped. From the looks of it he'll have some laundry to do.

Scoring for Team McCarthy were Cody Kelly (2g, 3a), Hans Almekinders (4g), Rob McNaughton (3g), Stephen Barksdale (2g), Patrick Schultz (1g, 1a) and Matt Gornto (1a). Scoring for Team Gordon were T.L. Hutchins (4a), Andy Ross (2g, 1a), Alvin Black (2g), Dwight Weld (2g), Ryan Meyer (2g), Brian Farmer (1g), Bryce Adrian (1g), Robbi Bozeman (1g), Mark Anna (1a) and Tim Woolley (1a).

Team Gordon goalie Brian Ring had 13 saves and Team McCarthy goalies Brad Smith (6 saves) and Max Cheatham (3 saves) platooned for nine saves.

In the early game Team Scout took an early lead with Rob Christensen scored one minute in on a Scott MacIver assist to make it 1-0. But Team Tate answered with three quick goals to make it 3-1. Each team scored another before the half to make it 4-2 in favor of Team Tate at the break.

In the second half Team Tate found its stroke and scored seven goals to Team Scout's two to make the final score 11-4.

Scoring for Team Tate were Will Lewis (4g, 1a), Michael Simel (4g, 1a), Adam Ball (2g), Kyle Rooney (1g), Trevor Robinson (1a), Adam Canoy (1a) and Blake Gaulden (1a). Team Tate goalie Adam Canoy had seven saves while Team Scout goalie Brad Smith (subbing for Brian Wisnowski) had six saves.

  FALL BALL 2003: SIXTH NIGHT
No more undefeated teams
Estacio falls to Tate 8-5, Gordon over Bailey 7-6 in OT
Posted at 3 p.m. Oct. 17, 2003

Team Estacio came into Tuesday night's games with a 3-0 record to face the 2-1 Team Tate. When the night ended both had identical 3-1 records as Team Tate led from wire-to-wire for an 8-5 win. In the night's early game, the winless Team Bailey gave the 1-2 team Gordon all it could handle before Gordon won 7-6 in sudden-death overtime.

Team Tate took the lead early on a goal by Will Lewis, which was quickly answered by a Chris Ragazzo goal to tie the game 1-1 six minutes in. But Team Tate scored three more before the half to Team Estacio's two to make it 4-3 in Tate's favor after 35 minutes.

Team Tate scored four more in the second half to Team Estacio's two to make the final score 8-5 as Team Estacio got its first loss of the year. Scoring for Team Tate were Lewis (2g, 1a), Michael Simel (2g, 1a), and Kyle Rooney, Blake Gaulden, Phil Sloate and Paul Reily with one goal each. Tate goalie Adam Canoy had nine saves.

Scoring for Team Estacio were Ragazzo (2g) and Al Mask, Shane Nouri and Joey Pietrantoni with one goal each. Team Estacio goalie Brad Acrey had nine saves.

In the early game, Team Gordon jumped to a 4-2 halftime lead but three quick second-half goals, all by Graham Georges unassisted as he muscled his way past the Gordon defense, made it 5-4 in favor of Team Bailey seven minutes into the second half. Dwight Weld tied it for Gordon at the 9:20 mark but Ben Richter put Bailey ahead again 6-5 at the 12-minute mark.

With seven minutes remaining in the half Andy Ross scored unassisted for Gordon to tie the game. Neither team could score down the stretch so the game went into sudden-death overtime. Weld scored on a Chris White assist five minutes into the overtime to give Gordon the win 7-6.

Scoring for Gordon were Weld (3g, 1a), Ross (2g), White (1g, 1a), Ryan Meyer (1g) and Tim Woolley (1a). Gordon goalie Brian Ring had five saves. Scoring for Team Bailey were Georges (3g), Richter (2g) and John Manhard (1g). Bailey goalie Ryan Webb had 11 saves in the game.

  FALL BALL 2003: FIFTH NIGHT
McCarthy, Tate get wins
McCarthy downs Scout 11-7, Tate beats Bailey 12-5
Posted at 11:40 p.m. Oct. 15, 2003

Team McCarthy and Team Scout traded goals in a close game for about three-quarters of Wednesday night's game, but with about eight minutes left Team McCarthy scored three straight to put it away 11-7. In the night's early game Team Tate got a 7-3 halftime lead over Team Bailey and pulled away to a 12-5 win.

Team McCarthy was playing with only three subs, the rescheduled games playing havoc with his personnel. But that slowed them down only a bit. Cody Kelly had five goals and Patrick Schultz had three to lead them to the victory. Rob Christensen's four goals for Team Scout weren't enough to make up the difference.

Team Scout actually led 4-3 at halftime, but Team McCarthy found its second wind and outscored Team Scout 8-3 in the second half, with Schultz and Kelly each getting three in that period. Scoring for Team McCarthy were Kelly (5g), Schultz (3g), Bryan Thompson (2g) and Matt Gornto (1g). Scoring for Team Scout were Christensen (4g), Rien Zabor (2g), Jack Craig (1g) and Kevin O'Conner (2a).

Team Scout goalie Brian Wisnowski had four saves in the match while Team McCarthy goalies Max Cheatham (3 saves) and Brad Smith (2 saves) combined for five saves.

In the night's first game, Will Lewis and Michael Simel combined for six goals as Team Tate pulled away for a 12-5 win over Team Bailey. Team Tate held a 7-3 lead at the half, with Lewis scoring three of team Tate's seven goals. They scored five more in the second half to Team Bailey's two to pull away for the win.

Scoring for Team Tate were Lewis (3g, 1a), Simel (3g, 1a), Phil Sloate (2g, 1a), R.J. Crumpler (2g), Felipe Jolles (1g) and Rob Fairchild (1g). Scoring for Team Bailey were Graham Georges (2g), Bob Kercher (1g, 1a), Jay Whitaker (1g) and Ben Richter (1g). Team Tate goalie Adam Canoy had six saves and Team Bailey goalie Ryan Webb had eight saves.

  FALL BALL 2003: FOURTH NIGHT
Estacio remains unbeaten; Gordon nips Scout 7-6
Team Estacio now at 3-0 after downing Team McCarthy 10-8
Posted at 11:00 p.m. Oct. 7, 2003

Team Estacio and Team McCarthy met with identical 2-0 marks on Oct. 7, 2003, but only one could come away with an unblemished record. As it turned out it was Team Estacio that remained unbeaten with an exciting 10-8 win over Team McCarthy.

The first half was close, with each team trading goals. It was 5-5 at the half after the first 35 minutes of play, with Cody Kelly and Hans Almekinders doing all the scoring for Team McCarthy. Then in the second half Team Estacio asserted itself with four straight goals in a 9-minute span -- Al Mask on a Shane Nouri assist 5:30 into the half, an unassisted goal by Tony Mendes 9:26 in, a Chris Ragazzo goal on a Nouri assist 11:32 in and a brother combo with Bill Hayes scoring on an assist from John Hayes 13:03 in, to make it 9-5.

Team McCarthy scored two goals late -- Benjamin Feldman from (didn't get who assisted) and Tim Kihlstrom from Kelly -- that made the score 9-7, but that was answered by an unassisted goal by Mike Homlish to make it 10-7 with eight minutes left. Kelly scored on a Kihlstrom assist for Team McCarthy to end the scoring at 10-8. Team Estacio goalie Brad Acrey had six of his 12 saves in the final 10 minutes while Team McCarthy tried to stage their rally.

Scoring for Team Estacio were Shane Nouri (2g, 3a), Mike Homlish (2g), Tony Mendes (2g), Chris Ragazzo (1g, 1a), Joey Pietrantoni (1g), Al Mask (1g), Bill Hayes (1g) and John Hayes (1a). Scoring for Team McCarthy were Cody Kelly (3g, 2a), Hans Almekinders (3g), Ryan Kihlstrom (1g, 1a), Benjamin Feldman (1g) and Patrick Schultz (1a). Team McCarthy goalie Brad Smith registered four saves, sharing goal time with Max Cheatham, who registered no saves.

The nightcap game was also a tense affair with Teams Gordon and Scout trading goals all the way. Team Scout went up 2-0 on back-to-back unassisted goals by Rob Christensen, who seemed invisible to the Team Gordon defense most of the night. Chris White made it 2-1 with an unassisted goal for Team Gordon, but Christensen scored again a few minutes later to make it 3-1. T.L. Hutchins scored for Gordon with 40 seconds left in the half to make the halftime score 3-2 in Scout's favor.

White tied it up for Gordon on a Tim Woolley assist 1:30 into the game, but Scott MacIver put Scout up again 4-3 two minutes later. Murray Forbes scored unassisted with a long stick 9:03 into the half to even the score at 4-4. Team Gordon took the lead for the first time 12:25 in when Dwight Weld scored on a Hutchins assist. That lead was short-lived though as Christensen again scored, this time on a Kevin O'Conner assist, to make it 5-5.

Mark Anna scored 17:50 in on a Dwight Weld assist to put Gordon up 6-5, but the ever-present Christensen made it 6-6 unassisted 21:08 in. At the 22:10 mark Mark Anna put Team Gordon up for good 7-6, but it took three late saves by Gordon goalie Brian Ring to preserve the win. One of those saves was a Christensen shot with 2 seconds left, but Ring scooped it up as the horn sounded.

Scoring for Team Gordon were Chris White (2g), Mark Anna (2g), T.L. Hutchins (1g, 1a), Dwight Weld (1g, 1a) and Tim Woolley (1a). Goalie Brian Ring had seven saves for Team Gordon, none bigger than the last three. Scoring for Team Scout were Rob Christensen (5g), Scott MacIver (1g) and Kevin O'Conner (1a). Team Scout goalie Brian Wiznowski had eight saves.
