Pirates take 3rd at beach
Bryan Thompson makes all-tourney team;
Brian Ring's play in goal has people buzzing

The Riverside A-team finished in third place in the 2003 Battle at the Beach on Saturday, Nov. 15, but in a roundabout way. Second-seeded Durham Academy had to leave early and didn't play in the tournament games, moving everyone up a slot. And then Woodberry Forest, which had defeated Riverside in an earlier seeding game, declined to play in the third-place game, giving that place to Riverside.

Riverside senior defenseman Bryan Thompson was named to the all-tournament team and, though he didn't bring home any hardware, it was the performance of Riverside senior goalie Brian Ring -- especially during a marathon Braveheart, during which he made five huge saves -- that caught the attention of players and coaches at the tournament.

That Braveheart came in a game against Caesar Rodney High School from Camden, Delaware, but it was a tie-breaker that should never have been played. The referees determined at one point in the game that the score was 5-4 in Riverside's favor when it was actually 5-3, so the actual score when regulation ended was 7-6 Riverside and not 7-7, which necessitated the Braveheart tiebreaker.

Riverside's Chris Cherry was chosen to participate in the Braveheart. The Delaware player won the faceoff and Cherry played excellent defense. Ring made a save and Cherry went downfield but shot wide of the goal. The Delaware player again came down and Ring saved, and then saved another. Then Cherry made another run but their goalie saved the shot.

By then all the other teams had completed their games and had heard about the battle going on between Riverside and Caesar Rodney. Members of the Cape Henry team, which won the championship, were twice heard to say, "That goalie is a beast!" regarding Ring's play. Soon both players were completely exhausted. Ring had just made a save and passed to Cherry when the referee said two fresh players should be sent in the game. Then, instead of giving Riverside the possession Ring and Cherry had just won, the referee called for a faceoff between the two fresh players.

This sent the Riverside partisans into howls of disbelief. In any event, the fresh Delaware player won the ensuing faceoff and managed to score. Still, it was a stirring performance and Ring received congratulations from dozens of players on several teams as he left the field. Later, after getting 13 saves in a tournament game, an opposing coach was overheard to say he wanted his goalie to learn to play like Brian.

Here is a short description of each seeding game and each tournament round game in which the Riverside A-team participated:

Seeding Game No. 1: vs. Norfolk Collegiate
Riverside won this one 14-0. Ring had three saves. Scoring were Jay Whitaker (2g, 1a), Andy Ross (2g, 1a), Lowell Dyer (2g), Kyle Rooney (2g), Joey Pietrantoni (1g, 1a) and T.L. Hutchins, Jonathan Beck, Chris Cherry, Brian Moran and Bryce Adrian with a goal apiece.

Seeding Game No. 2: vs. Colonial Forge
Riverside won 7-2. Ryan Webb had five saves in goal. Scoring were Brian Jobe (2g), Jay Whitaker (2a), Kyle Rooney, Brian Moran, Andy Ross, Joey Pietrantoni and Murray Forbes with one goal each, and T.L. Hutchins and Chris Cherry with one assist each.

Seeding Game No. 3: vs. Woodberry Forest
Riverside lost this one 8-1. Woodberry Forest played very well and Riverside did not, showing some fatigue from the first two games. Brian Ring had seven saves in this game. Scoring were Andy Ross with one goal and Chris Cherry with one assist.

Seeding Game No. 4: vs. Caesar Rodney
This was the Braveheart game. Riverside lost 8-7. Brian Ring had nine saves in this game, five in the Braveheart. Scoring were Andy Ross (3g, 1a), Brian Jobe (1g, 1a), and Chris Cherry, Bryan Thompson and T.L. Hutchins with 1 goal each. Bryan's goal was one for the highlight reel as he did a 360-degree dodge in front of the crease and then scored.

Seeding Game No. 5: vs. Laney
Riverside lost this one 6-3. Ryan Webb had four saves and five goals against in this one. Brian Ring, who came in after Ryan had to leave the game on a no-mouthpiece penalty, had three saves and one goal against in the final 15 minutes of the 30-minute game. Scoring were T.L. Hutchins with two goals and Bryan Thompson with one goal.

Tournament Game No. 1: vs. Cape Henlopen (Delaware)
Riverside won this one 8-5. Brian Ring had 11 saves in the game. Scoring were T.L. Hutchins (3g), and Kyle Rooney, Jay Whitaker, Andy Ross and Joey Pietrantoni with one goal each. Brian Jobe and Lowell Dyer each had an assist.

Quarterfinal Tournament Game No. 2: vs. Lafayette
Riverside won this one 6-5 to advance to the semifinals. Brian Ring had 12 saves in this game. Scoring were T.L. Hutchins (2g, 2a), Andy Ross (3g, 1a), Brian Jobe (1g), and Jay Whitaker and Brian Moran with one assist each.

Semifinal Tournament Game: vs. Caesar Rodney
Riverside, looking sluggish and tired, lost 6-2 to the team they in reality defeated in the Braveheart game mentioned above. Brian Ring had 13 saves in this game. Scoring were T.L. Hutchins (2g, 1a), Brian Jobe (2g), Andy Ross (2g), Chris Cherry (1g) and Bryan Thompson (1a).

Consolation Third-Place Game: vs. Woodberry Forest
Woodberry Forest declined to play, deciding to leave for the trip back to their school. By doing so they forfeited and Riverside was given third place.

The Riverside B-team, mostly 9th and 10th graders playing against varsity starters, did not win any seeding games but did defeat Garfield in a Braveheart in a tournament consolation game. Bob Kercher scored the winning goal during the Braveheart. Hope to have B-team stats later.

FALL BALL 2003: TRIANGLE vs. TRIAD ALL-STARS
Triangle over Triad 10-4
Triangle all-stars score five in each half to cruise to win

The Durham-Chapel Hill T.A.L.L. all-stars traveled to Greensboro on Saturday, Nov. 1, and defeated the all-stars from the Triad Youth Lacrosse Association 10-4.

The Triangle team jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter after Cody Kelly scored on a Shane Nouri assist 2:40 into the game. Mike Homlish scored on an R.J. Crumpler assist in a man-up nine minutes into the first period to make it 2-0, Triangle.

The Triangle squad realized at the beginning of the game that no one had brought water for the team, and it was an unseasonably hot day with a cloudless sky and a blaring sun. They started the game without refreshment, but by the end of the first period Linda Fowler, R.J. Crumper's mom, and her husband Butch, arrived with a case of bottled water, much to the relief of the players, who responded with three goals in the second period.

Will Lewis and Jack Craig both scored unassisted to make it 4-0 with eight minutes left in the first half (they were playing 12-minute quarters with stop time). But with five minutes left, and the Triangle team down a man, the Triad's Kyle Fredrick (Grimsley) scored on an assist from Alston Claytor (W. Guilford) to make it 4-1. The Triangle answered that goal when Rob Christensen scored unassisted with two minutes remaining to make it 5-1 at the half.

Triangle goalie Brian Ring had six saves in the first period, three of them one-on-one stops. Meanwhile, Evan Watts and James Leath platooned for six saves for the Triad (Watts with 4, Leath with 2).

The Triangle squad went for a snooze in the third period, scoring no goals, while the Triad managed a single goal. Claytor scored unassisted for Triad to make it 5-2 after three quarters. The Triad squad had three man-up opportunities in the third period but couldn't capitalize on any of them.

In the final period, the Triangle opened with two quick goals, one by Lewis on a Graham Georges assist and another by Lewis unassisted to make it 7-2 with nine minutes remaining in the game. But Colin Sherwood (Grimsley) scored unassisted with eight minutes left and Marcus Kirby (Bishop McGinnis) scored on an assist from Stephen Krasicky (W. Guilford) with seven minutes remaining to pull Triad to within three, 7-4.

The Triangle squad scored three unanswered down the stretch, however, to make the final score 10-4. The final three goals were Georges on an assist by Joey Pietrantoni, Dwight Weld on a Georges assist and Weld on a Nouri assist for the final goal.

Ring ended the game with eight saves for the Triangle. Watts and Leath ended with a combined 12 saves for the Triad. Watts had eight and Leath had four.

  FALL BALL 2003: FINAL NIGHT
McCarthy wins third title 5-2
Tate over Gordon 11-5; Scout over Bailey 6-5;
Durham-CH TALL 11-12th defeats Raleigh TALL 7-4

Posted at 11:10 p.m. Oct. 29, 2003

Team McCarthy defeated Team Estacio 5-2 in the fall ball championship game on Wednesday, Oct. 29, on the Duke turf. The win gave Coach Sean McCarthy his third TALL fall ball championship in a row. Meanwhile, Team Tate defeated Team Gordon in the 3 vs. 4 game to give Team Tate a 6-1 record identical to Team McCarthy's. Team Scout came from four goals down to defeat Team Bailey in the 5 vs. 6 game.

Also on Wednesday, the Durham-Chapel Hill TALL fall ball all-star teams both won games against their Raleigh TALL fall ball counterparts. The 11-12th grade all-stars defeated Raleigh 7-4 and the 9-10th grade all-stars defeated the Raleigh fall ball team 3-1.

Cody Kelly of Team McCarthy won this year's scoring title with 33 points. Coach McCarthy announced after the game that Kelly will be the recipient of an as-yet-undetermined prize courtesy of Great Atlantic Lacrosse Company. The prize will become an annual gift to the scoring winner, McCarthy said.

In the championship game hardly anyone could buy a goal in the first half. Team McCarthy led 2-0 at the break on two unassisted goals by Patrick Schultz. In the second half Team McCarthy reeled off three unanswered, all three by Kelly, one assisted by Stephen Barksdale and the other by Hans Almekinders, to make it 5-0. Late goals by Joey Pietrantoni and Shane Nouri made it 5-2 but Team Estacio ran out of time.

Team McCarthy goalie Brad Smith had nine saves and five goals against. Max Cheatham had one save and no goals against for McCarthy as well. Team Estacio goalie Brad Acrey had seven saves and five goals against.

No. 3 Tate vs. No. 4 Gordon

In the 3 vs. 4 game, Team Tate led 4-1 at the half on goals by Blake Gaulden on a Michael Simel assist, and unassisted goals by Will Lewis, Kyle Rooney and Adam Ball. Conor Buckley scored unassisted for Team Gordon in the first half.

In the second half, Team Tate won the scoring duel 7-4 with Lewis scoring four and assisting on two others. Simel, Phil Sloate and Rooney also scored. Ball had two more assists for Team Tate in the second half. For Team Gordon, Mark Anna had two goals, one off the opening faceoff of the second half, Will Renfrow scored on an Andy Ross assist and Dwight Weld scored unassisted to make the final score 11-5 in Tate's favor.

Tate goalie Adam Canoy had seven saves and five goals against. Goalie Brian Ring had 14 saves, most of those close in, for Team Gordon.

No. 5 Scout vs. No. 6 Bailey

In the 5 vs. 6 game, Team Bailey started strong, moving out to a 4-0 lead on three unassisted goals by Graham Georges and one by Jay Whitaker. Late in the first half Team Scout scored two of its own, one by Rien Zabor and another by Jack Craig, both unassisted, to make it 4-2 in Bailey's favor at the half.

But Team Scout outscored Team Bailey 4-1 down the stretch to win it 6-5. Craig had two for Team Scout in the second half and Rob Christensen had a goal and an assist. Scott MacIver also scored unassisted for Scout. The only goal for Team Bailey in the second half was Georges' unassisted goal with 2:40 remaining in the game.

11-12th grade all-star game

In the Durham-Chapel Hill TALL vs. the Raleigh TALL all-star game featuring 11th and 12th graders, Raleigh took the early lead on a goal by Joe Doyle, one of three scores by Doyle on the night. But Durham-Chapel Hill scored four unanswered in the rest of the half to make it 4-1 at the break. The first came in dramatic fashion as Michael Simel checked the Raleigh goalie's stick near the restraining line and picked up the ball an put it into an empty net. Hans Almekinders, Jack Craig and Michael Homlish also scored. Craig's goal came on an assist from Dwight Weld.

In the second half Doyle again scored early to make it 4-2 but the Riverside duo of Andy Ross and T.L. Hutchins combined to make it 5-2, with Hutchins assisting Ross on the score. Phil Sloate scored unassisted to make it 6-2 with 14 minutes remaining, but Raleigh's J.R. Wahlert scored unassisted at 13:30 to make it 6-3.

Doyle scored again with 4:21 left to make it 6-4 but that was as close as the Raleigh all-stars would get. Hans Almekinders scored for the Durham-Chapel Hill team with 16 seconds remaining to make the final score 7-4.

Brian Ring and Adam Canoy platooned in goal for the Durham-Chapel Hill team, Ring getting five saves and Canoy 2. Matt Burnham and Trip Auray handled the goal duties for the Raleigh team, with Auray getting three saves and Burnham two.

In an interesting development, the Raleigh team arrived and the Riverside faithful noticed a familiar figure running on the field with them. It turns out it was 1998 Pirate All-Stater Sean Hizey, who is now living and working in Raleigh and who had been coaching during their fall ball season. With the Durham-Chapel Hill group coached by Scott Gordon and Greg Tate, it was almost a reunion of Riverside's 1998 state championship team. Sean McCarthy also coached the team but he's a Jordan grad, though we won't hold that against him.

9-10th grade all-star game

On Field B, while the older guys were playing their all-star game, the Durham-Chapel Hill 9th and 10th graders defeated the Raleigh 9th and 10th graders 3-1. Sorry, but no scoring info on that one.
