In the first semifinal game, Team Gordon scored quickly, just 1:28 into the game, to go up 1-0 on a Pietrantoni goal on a Tim Woolley assist. Team Hizey scored three in the third quarter to Team Gordon's two. Scoring for Hizey were Grier Allison from Buckley twice and Kercher from Rein Zabor. For Gordon, Kihlstrom scored twice more in the third, once unassisted and once on a Pietrantoni assist. Team Gordon outscored Team Hizey 3-2 in the final period, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 5-goal deficit that it gave up in the first quarter. Ben Feldman scored on a Russell Warren assist, Woolley scored unassisted and Bryan Reynolds scored also unassisted to give Gordon 8 at the horn. For Team Hizey, Ragazzo scored from Buckley and Josh Jennings scored unassisted to give them 12 goals at the end of the game. In goal for Team Hizey, Brad Smith had 7 saves and 8 goals against. Scoring in that stretch were Day from Colin Cash, Day unassisted, Scot MacIver unassisted and Gardner unassisted. MacIver scored a couple of minutes later on a Day assist to give Bailey the lead 9-8, but Team Tate answered quickly as defenseman Andrews scored, beating the defense down the field to make it 9-9 with 4:05 left in the third quarter. With 1:29 left, MacIver scored on a Manning assist to make it 10-9 at the break Team Tate, as it did in the second period, got hot early in the final quarter, scoring four goals in a three-minute period to pull out to a 13-10 lead. Weld scored on an Alvin Black assist, Weld scored unassisted, Black scored on a Weld assist and Mendes scored unassisted in that stretch. Team Tate dominated faceoffs and Team Bailey was clearly hampered by the absence of its main faceoff man, Jonathan Beck, who was injured in a yard work accident over the weekend. Tate and Hizey advance with big wins Hizey over Scout 14-2, Tate over Estacio 16-5 Posted at 11:25 p.m., Oct. 21, 2004 Third-seeded Team Hizey had an easy time of it with sixth-seeded and undermanned Team Scout, which played with 11 players, winning 14-2. In the second game on Thursday, Oct. 21, fourth-seeded Team Tate outgunned fifth-seeded Team Estacio 16-5. Team Hizey will face No. 2 Team Gordon in the early game on Tuesday, Oct. 26, while Team Tate will face No. 1 Team Bailey in the late game on Tuesday. The winner of those two games will play at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Riverside. Team Scout was again short of manpower, which has been a problem for the team all season. Only 11 players showed up to face Team Hizey, which had 16 players of its own. Team Hizey jumped to a 5-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Bob Kercher, a goal by Chris Ragazzo from Mike McGeary, a Grier Allison goal from Jack Tonges, a Ragazzo goal from Kercher and an unassisted Phil Sloate goal.
Team Hizey scored five more in the second quarter as Team Scout went scoreless. To make matters worse, one of Scout's leading scorers, Kyle Rooney, went down with an ankle injury midway through the period and did not play the rest of the night, leaving Team Scout in a familiar position -- no subs. For Hizey, Ragazzo scored on a Ryan Meyer assist, Meyer scored on a Kercher assist, Ragazzo scored on a Tonges assist, Daniel Hodges-Copple scored unassisted and Kercher added one unassisted to make it 11-1 at the half. Brandon Marks scored unassisted for Scout and Adam Jennings scored unassisted for Hizey to make the final score 14-2. The biggest drama in the second half was wondering if Team Hizey, coached by Greg Tate in Sean Hizey's absence, could get a goal for Eli McDuffie, which would be his first. The campaign seemed successful at the 4:30 mark when McDuffie put a garbage goal into the net. However, a flag had been thrown a second before the shot and the goal was disallowed, much to the disappointment of the Hizey players. In goal for Team Hizey, Brad Smith had 11 saves and 2 goals against. For Team Scout, Bryan Rooney had 13 saves and 14 goals against. In the late game between the 4 and 5 seeds, Team Tate took a commanding lead after one period, leading 4-1 at the buzzer. Ryan Fisher scored two unassisted for Tate in that period while Bob Tauchen scored unassisted and Trevor Robinson scored on a Zack Friedman assist. Each team scored a single goal in the final period, Weld scoring unassisted for Tate and R.J. Crumpler scoring unassisted for Estacio to make the final score 16-5. In goal for Tate, Matt Patterson had 15 saves and 5 goals against. For Team Estacio, Max Cheatham had 6 saves and 5 goals against; Roj Sundar had 4 saves and 11 goals against.
