The Riverside Pirates, playing in the UNC Holiday Showcase quarterfinals against reigning state champions Apex, came out of the blocks as cold as the gray day on which they were playing and got down 8-2 before halftime. They scored five goals to Apex's single goal in the second half but fell short in their comeback bid, losing 9-7.

The Pirates, having won all of their three seeding games, were awarded with a bye in the tournament round, which meant they sat on the cold ground and watched Apex dismantle Athens Drive in the first round. They tied the game at 2-2 but quickly fell behind in the 14-minute first half as Apex went on a six-goal run.

Riverside Coach Madison Thompson got his charges fired up during the two minute halftime and the Pirates came out red hot, scoring four straight goals to cut the margin to 8-6. Apex scored to make it 9-6, after which Riverside scored its final goal with 4 minutes remaining in the game. In the last furious minutes the Pirates hit four pipes but couldn't put the ball into the goal.

Doug Cook had 1g, 1a in the Apex game; Tim Woolley had 2g; Colin Cash and Bob Kercher each had 1g; and Alvin Black had 1a. Goalie Brad Smith had 2 saves.

In the final seeding game the Pirates played an exciting game against Enloe, managing to win 12-10 after trailing early 3-2. Enloe tied the game at 4-4 but the Pirates scored two consecutive goals for a 2-goal lead that they managed to keep about ten minutes. But the game Enloe squad tied the game at 9-9, fell behind 11-9 before pulling to within one at 11-10. A Bob Kercher goal with 1:17 remaining put the game away.

Tim Woolley led in points against Enloe with 3g and 3a; Bob Kercher had 5 goals; Alvin Black had 2g, 1a; Jonathan Beck had 2g; Zach Brown and Philip Tieszen each had 1a. Goalie Brad Smith had 9 saves.

In the second seeding game against the Wilmington squad, the Pirates led the whole way to win 7-2. Scoring in the Wilmington game were Bob Kercer with 3g, 1a; Doug Cook with 2g, 1a; Tim Woolley with 1g, 1a; and Alvin Black with 1a.

In the first game of the day, Riverside defeated Triad LC 9-4 after jumping out to a 5-1 lead early. Scoring were Bob Kercher with 4g; Clayton Abbott with 2g; Jonathan Beck with 2g; Doug Cook with 1g and Tim Woolley with 1a.

Leading the scoring was Bob Kercher with 13 goals. Tim Woolley had 6 goals and 5 assists. Doug Cook had 4 goals and 3 assists. Alvin Black had 3 goals and 2 assists. Jonathan Beck had 4 goals. Philip Tieszen had 2 goals and 1 assist. Clayton Abbott had 2g. Colin Cash had 1 goal and Zach Brown had one assist.

Riverside goalie Brad Smith had 28 saves on the day. [More photos later]

Pirates go 3-2 at Battle at the Beach
Lots of gimpy players on sideline by the end of the day

It was an up-and-down day for the Riverside team at the 10th Annual Battle at the Beach at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach on Saturday, Nov. 12. Inconsistent play and some key injuries marred the day, but a final-game win over Nansemond Suffolk Academy ended the day on a high note.

Attackman Doug Cook was named the team's MVP after leading the scoring with 17 points (14g, 3a). Alvin Black had 14 (11g, 3a), and Jonathan Beck had 11 (9g, 2a).

The Chapel Hill High contingent represented the Triangle and North Carolina well by winning the whole thing, dominating a northern Virginia travel team called Toxic Lacrosse from the Culpeper area in the tournament final, 10-1. This was the tenth Battle at the Beach and Chapel Hill's win means that North Carolina teams have won four of them. Riverside won in 1997 and 1998, Durham Academy won three or four years ago (I think) and now the Tigers have won one.

The other North Carolina team in this year's tournament, Old North State from Greensboro, was in the consolation game and was leading by a couple of goals when we left, so they probably ended up placing third.

The Pirates opened the day with a 15-0 drubbing of Catholic, a team from the Norfolk area. They next lost a close battle to Colonial Forge, a team from the Fredericksburg area, by a score of 11-8. In their first after-lunch game they lost to Old North State from Greensboro 12-7 after leading by two at the midway point. Getting back on track, they defeated Gar-Field of Woodbridge, Va., 19-7 in the 2 p.m. game to make it into the runner-up bracket. They defeated Nansemond Suffolk 8-6 in that game to end their day at the beach.

Middie Mike Schwartz brought back his x-rays from the hospital and shared them with his teammates. [Click on photo to see larger version]
Along the way, though, the bumps and bruises added up. The most serious was Mike Schwartz's collar-bone fracture about halfway through the Colonial Forge game. Charlie and Carol Thompson acted as the ambulance service and got him to the hospital, got him x-rayed and treated, and got him back in time for him to watch Riverside's final two games from the sidelines.

Also on the walking wounded list were Alvin Black, who was bothered by leg cramps most of the day, and Alex Starnes, who caught a stick in the knee and was noticeably limping the rest of the tournament.

Roundup of the five games:

9:50: Riverside vs. Catholic: This was never in doubt as Riverside scored 15 goals and kept Catholic to just a few shots. Alvin Black had 3g and 1a to lead scoring. Other scoring: Doug Cook 3g; Philip Tieszen 2g, 1a; Colin Cash 2g, 1a; Jonathan Beck 2g; Mike Schwartz, Clayton Abbott and Matt Tieszen 1g each; and defenseman Zach Brown 1a. Goalie Brad Smith had 3 saves in the game.

10:40: Riverside vs. Colonial Forge: Riverside got behind 2-0 early but managed to tie it at 4-4 and then take the lead 5-4 with 12 minutes left in the 40-minute game. But a failure to get back on defense at key points (there were no faceoffs after goals; play resumed immediately with the goalie making an outlet pass) allowed Colonial Forge to score goals less than 10 seconds after Riverside goals on three separate occasions. Colonial Forge outscored Riverside 7-3 in the final 10 minutes to win 11-8. Goalie Brad Smith had 7 saves in the game. Mike Schwartz got a hard-but-legal hit at the 21-minute mark and left with a broken collar bone (just a coincidence that he was wearing jersey number 13!?). Cook led the scoring with 2g, 1a; Philip Tieszen had 2g; Cash, Chris Hunt, Black and Beck each had one goal, and Corey Stanford had an assist.

1:10: Riverside vs. Old North State: Riverside led this game twice by a two-goal margin, 5-3 and 6-4. But in a five-minute span the wheels came off for the Pirates and the select team from Greensboro ran off 6 unanswered goals and ended up winning 12-7. Again the Pirates gave up several goals immediately after scoring one of their own. Black led the scoring for Riverside with 4g; Cook had 1g and 1a; Beck and Matt Tieszen had one goal each and Stanford had an assist. Lowlights for this game were the Old North State coach who yelled to one of his defensemen, "Hit him in the face; they won't call it!", and the Old North State parent who was ejected for questioning loudly nearly every call of the refs.

2:00: Riverside vs. Gar-Field: The Pirates regained their composure for their fourth game of the day and dominated Gar-Field Senior High from Woodbridge, VA. They were leading 10-2 at the midpoint and ended up winning 19-7. Cook led the scoring with 5 goals; Beck had 4g, 1a; Cash and Sam Cordones each had 3g, 2a; Clayton Abbott had 2g, 1a; Black had 1g, 2a; Matt Tieszen had 1g, and Hunt had 1a.

3:40: Riverside vs. Nansemond Suffolk: Riverside made it into the runner-up bracket and was scheduled to play Norfolk Academy. However, Riverside's white jerseys and Norfolk Academy's light gray jerseys made it impossible for the teams to meet on the field and to be able to tell their teammates from their opponents. So the organizers made a decision to switch opponents to get each team contrasting jerseys. Riverside ended up being paired with Nansemond Suffolk, an old foe from years past. This was a close game all the way. Riverside took an early lead 1:38 into the game when Philip Tieszen scored unassisted to make it 1-0. The Saints answered back to make it 1-1 and then Corey Stanford scored on a Doug Cook assist to make it 2-1. The Saints then scored two in a row to make it 3-2 in their favor. But Riverside answered with two of their won when Cook scored on a Matt Tieszen assist and Black scored on a Beck assist to make it 4-3 Riverside 6:38 into the game. Nansemond Suffolk tied the game at 4-4 but two more goals by the Pirates made it 6-4 as Black scored on a Beck assist and Cook scored unassisted. During the first 20 minutes of the 40-minute game Riverside goalie Brad Smith was looking directly into a setting sun. During that period the Saints scored five goals. But at the 20-minute mark, the refs let the teams switch sides and then it was the Saints goalie who got to look into the sun. Max Cheatham played the second half of the game in goal for Riverside and had five saves during that period. Riverside went on to win 8-6. Cook led scoring with 3g, 1a; Black had 2g; Philip Tieszen and Corey Stanford each had 1g; and Matt Tieszen and Sam Cordones each had 1a.

Estacio takes season title 8-6 over Tate
Scout defeats Hubbard 10-4 in consolation match

Posted at 11:55 p.m., Oct. 19, 2005

Team Estacio (above) was the winner of the 2005 Bull City Fall Ball Championship game as well as the regular-season title, ending the season with a 9-1 record. They were coached by former Riverside assistant coach, and now Chapel Hill head coach Glenn Estacio (at left). [Click on photo to see larger version]
Team Estacio and Team Tate battled to a draw for more than half of Wednesday night's championship game, but midway through the third period Team Estacio pulled to a 2-goal lead, extending that to three goals early in the final period, and held on for an 8-6 win and the fall ball season title.

There was little celebration, however, in the Estacio camp as the final horn (yes, we actually had a horn for this one) sounded. With 1:35 remaining in the game Estacio's leading scorer, Bob Kercher, turned his ankle and had to be carried off the field. The Estacio players were in no mood to celebrate a few minutes later after they'd won. Instead, they went over to where Bob was seated on the ground to see how he was doing.

Team Tate got on the board first at 12:09 when Riverside's Tim Woolley, Tate's scoring leader, scored unassisted to make it 1-0. But that lead didn't last long. Team Estacio scored three unanswered to take a 3-1 lead. Riverside's Clayton Abbott scored at 10:46 on an assist from Northern's Brett Banford, East's Jack Tonges scored unassisted and then Kercher scored unassisted at 8:02. That was an especially disheartening goal for Team Tate as their goalie, Riverside's Brad Smith, had made a spectacular save on the Kercher shot, only to see the ball rebound off his leg and dribble past the line.

Tate answered back, though, with two goals to end the period. Riverside's Dylan Britt scored unassisted on a drive from the goalie's left side and then Riverside's Matthew Tieszen scored on a drive of his own to make it 3-3 after one period.

At 14:33 of the second period Kercher had to come out of the game after stepping in a hole on the sideline and turning his ankle. It's not clear if it was the same ankle he was to hurt later. But he went back into the game after a few minutes. At the 8:49 mark Riverside's Chris Hunt put Estacio up 4-3 on an unassisted goal, and then Riverside's Eric Bircher made it 5-3 on a goal assisted by Tonges. Team Tate added one in the period as East's Evan Kawula scored unassisted to make it 5-4 as the half came to an end.

Tate tied the game at 5-5 early in the third period as Woolley scored on an assist from Cedar Ridge's Nick Perry at the 12:13 mark. Five minutes later, at 7:15, Kercher made it 6-5 in Estacio's favor with an unassisted goal, followed at 1:43 by an unassisted goal by Banford to make it 7-5 at the end of three periods.

Team Estacio made it 8-5 when Tonges scored unassisted at 13:27. Then followed one of the highlights of the final period, and it wasn't a score at all. On a ride, Woolley reached high with one hand near midfield and snagged a pass that was moving so fast it sounded like a baseball hitting a catcher's mitt when it landed in Woolley's stick. Woolley's interception elicited oohs and aaahs from the spectators and both benches. The only thing that prevented him from scoring after the interception was an equally spectacular save by Riverside's Max Cheatham, in goal for Team Estacio.

Team Tate managed to kill off two penalties over the next eight minutes. The last of those resulted in a man-down goal by Team Tate as Woolley scored the game's last goal unassisted at 3:57 to make the score 8-6. Team Estacio's game plan at that point was for Kercher to keep the ball and run out the clock. He managed to run out all but 1:35, when he sustained his injury.

Team Estacio's goalie, Max Cheatham of Riverside, had 6 saves. Team Tate's goalie, Brad Smith of Riverside, also had 6 saves. Faceoffs were nearly halved, with Team Estacio winning 9 of 17. Kercher had five of those for Estacio. Kawula won 4 faceoffs for Team Tate.

In the consolation game between Teams Scout and Hubbard both teams came out tentatively, with nearly eight minutes passing before either scored. The score was 1-1 after the first period, with East's Dave Fulton scoring on an assist from Riverside's Alvin Black for Team Scout and Riverside's Alex Starnes scoring on an assist from East's Ryan Shaban for Team Hubbard.

Team Scout pulled to a 4-3 lead by halftime. Scoring for Team Scout in the second period were Black on a garbage goal, East's Tony Mendes unassisted and Riverside's David Hinkle on a Black assist. For Team Hubbard, Shaban added one unassisted and Starnes scored again on a Shaban assist to make it a one-goal lead for Team Scout at halftime.

The final period was all Team Scout, coached by Greg Tate in Josh Scout's absence. They scored four more times in the final period while Team Hubbard was blanked in the period. Scoring for Scout in the period were Black unassisted at 12:43, Mendes from Black at 5:55, Riverside's Tyler Stanford unassisted at 2:57 and Mendes unassisted with 47 seconds remaining, making the final score 10-4.
