Riverside comes alive in 15-8 downing of East Chapel Hill
(April 6, 2001)

The Riverside Pirates, playing their best game of the season, defeated East Chapel Hill 15-8 on Friday, April 6. Chris Feifs led the scoring with six goals, Andy DeLamielleure had three, Kevin Raspet and Cory Coffman each added two, and Anthony Howard and Graham Murray scored one each. Feifs and Coffman had two assists each, and Howard, Monty Montsinger and Laurence Tilley had one assist each.

Riverside's midfielders dominated in the game, as they had been predicted to do all season. Raspet and Feifs won 19 of their 26 faceoffs, and the rest of the midfielders were quicker down the field than their opponents and quicker to get to ground balls.

The defense was strong against East Chapel Hill, allowing only three goals in the first half against eight of Riverside's own. Andy DeLamielleure scored first for Riverside on an assist from Coffman at 11:20, followed two minutes later by an Anthony Howard goal on a Monty Montsinger assist.

East Chapel Hill managed its first goal at 4:41 on a Cody Kelly goal on a Matt Stankus assist to make it 2-1 Riverside. At 2:41 Coffman scored on a Tilley assist to make it 3-1 as the first quarter ended.

The second period opened with a Kevin Raspet goal to make it 4-1 at 8:49, but ECH quickly countered with a goal from David Fussell-Louie at 8:19. A great dodge by Coffman to get inside the ECH defense at 6:04 made it 5-2. That was followed by an extra-man goal by Feifs at 3:46, countered at 3:07 by a man-down goal by ECH's Sam Sanders on a Cody Kelly assist to make it 6-3.

Feifs added two more goals in the waning moments, both unassisted. He scored at :13 and :03 to make it 8-3 Riverside at the half.

ECH scored first as the second half opened when Bryan Young put one in unassisted at 10:09. Three quick RHS goals though, gave Riverside some cushion. Andy DeLamielleure scored at 9:52 on a good feed from Coffman, and then again at 9:22 on a similar feed from Feifs. Feifs scored his fourth goal of the night at 7:06 to make it 11-4 Riverside.

Two quick goals by East Chapel Hill, one by Alex Waldorf and another by Bryan Young made it 11-6 with 3:32 left. But a Kevin Raspet goal on a Feifs assist at 1:19 made it 12-6. ECH returned the earlier favor of Feifs' goal with 3 seconds left in the half when Waldorf scored on a Kelly assist with three seconds remaining in the third quarter to make it 12-7.

ECH scored a man-up goal at 9:38 when Waldorf scored his third goal, this one assisted by Matt Stankus, to make it 12-8, but that was all of the scoring for the night for East Chapel Hill. Riverside scored three more times, one on a Graham Murray goal on a Howard assist at 6:52, another unassisted Feifs goal at 5:31, and a final unassisted Fiefs goal at :36.

Riverside downs Jordan 7-6 in tight contest
(March 27, 2001)

The Pirates saw their three-goal lead dwindle in the last quarter on Tuesday, March 27, but held on to defeat the Jordan Falcons 7-6. Chris Feifs led the scoring for Riverside with four goals. Cory Coffman had two goals and Kevin Raspet had one goal and four assists.

The Falcons drew first blood only 22 seconds into the game when attackman Scott Lee went in unmolested by the Pirate defense to put one past Riverside goaltender Richard Ladd at 11:38 of the first period. Riverside controlled the ball for most of the remainder of the period, allowing the Falcons to set up on offense only twice the rest of the quarter.

But the Pirates could only manage one goal despite possessing the ball for nearly 10 minutes in the period. At 2:17 of the period Chris Feifs scored his first goal on a Kevin Raspet assist to tie the game.

Twelve seconds into the second period Feifs scored his second goal unassisted to put Riverside up 2-1. However, 10 seconds later Riverside defenseman Nick Wallhauser was called for a slash and Jordan capitalized on the extra-man opportunity when Eric Gardner scored on a Lee assist to tie the game at 2-2.

The next few minutes were highlighted by spectacular saves on both ends. At 8:50 of the second period Ladd, the Pirate goaltender, moved the ball downfield but lost it to a check. It was picked up by a Falcon player who saw open net, seemingly. However, Pirate defenseman Kevin Radack stepped into the net and caught the Falcon shot cleanly in his stick and passed it for a clear.

Then, at 5:24 it was the Falcons turn for a great save when goaltender George Chao made a spectacular save on a shot by Pirate Laurence Tilley to preserve the tie.

At 2:43, Riverside had two player in the penalty box. Kevin Raspet and Cory Coffman were both penalized to put the Pirates down two men briefly. They managed to kill one penalty but the Falcons scored at 1:29 before the Pirates were back at full strength when Gardner again scored on a feed from Lee from behind the goal to make it 3-2 Jordan.

Twenty seconds later Feifs scored his third goal, this one also on a Raspet assist when he shot from 25 feet and bounced it past the Falcon goalkeeper to tie the game 3-3 as the half ended.

Raspet opened the second half scoring with a goal at 9:58 to put Riverside ahead for the first time, 4-3. Then, at 5:44, after Jordan's John Solie was called for a slash, Cory Coffman scored on the power play after a Raspet assist to make it 5-3 Riverside.

The score remained 5-3 as the final period opened, but a Falcon goal by Aaron Russell on a Taylor Shenkman assist made it 5-4 at 10:34. Fifteen seconds later, though, another Chris Feifs from Kevin Raspet goal made it 6-4. A Coffman goal on a Raspet assist made it 7-4 at 8:10 and the Pirates seemed to have the game under control.

The Falcons' Scott Lee scored unassisted at 6:52 to pull Jordan to within two, and it took a monster save at 5:32 by Pirates' goalkeeper Richard Ladd on an Eric Gardner shot to keep the Pirates up two. That margin was short-lived though. Falcon Scott Lee scored again unassisted at 4:56 to make the score 7-6.

The Pirates had an extra-man opportunity at 3:44 when Jordan's Dan Roland was called for a 30-second foul but they couldn't convert. Jordan gained possession at 2:50 but Riverside managed to get the ball back with 2:03 remaining. They played keep-away behind the Jordan goal for the remaining time to preserve the close win.

Riverside plays Conn. power Wilton tough in 7-11 loss
(March 14, 2001)

Riverside hung close against the Wilton Warriors on Wednesday, March 14, leading on two occasions and tying the game three times before falling behind in the fourth quarter.

Cory Coffman led the scoring for Riverside with three goals. Kevin Raspet added two more and Chris Feifs and Laurence Tilley each added one for the Pirates.

After Tuesday's lackluster performance at Chapel Hill, having to face the three-time state champions from Connecticut was a daunting task. The fact that the Warriors had two starters who are heading to Johns Hopkins next fall to play lacrosse -- attackman Todd Smith and midfielder Sam Perry -- made for even more trepidation.

But the Pirates came out hot and inspired. An unassisted Kevin Raspet goal made it 1-0 Riverside before the crowd had settled in. Future Bluejay Smith tied the game on an unassisted goal for the Warriors, but an unassisted goal by Cory Coffman put Riverside up again 2-1.

Sam Perry quickly tied the game on an unassisted goal, followed by two goals, one by John Curry on a Smith assist and the other by Smith assisted by Perry, to make it 4-3 Wilton at the end of the first quarter.

Only one goal was scored in the second period, this one by the Warriors' Chris Connolly, to make it 5-3 Wilton at the half.

Again Riverside came out playing inspired lacrosse as the second half began, tying the game at 5-5 on unassisted goals by Feifs and Raspet. But the see-saw tilted again when Todd Smith scored his third and fourth goals of the day to make it 7-5 Wilton at the end of the third period.

Riverside Coach Jim Kirkley got his bench some playing time in the fourth period in this unofficial game. Sophomore goalie Zach Brewer played in the net in the final quarter and most, if not all, of the bench saw playing time in the final period. Still, Riverside managed to tie the game a 7-7 on two unassisted goals, a one-hander from around the back of the Warrior goal by Tilley and hard shot by Coffman.

The Warriors scored four goals to finish out the scoring in the game, a Carter Perry goal on a Bruce Robinson assist, a Mike Wood putback, a Bill Ryan goal on a Doug D'Auria assist and a goal by longstick Jay Bullack just before the buzzer. Wilton hasn't even begun official practice yet this year, which is why they were being coached by Mike Fuller of Bridgeton Academy in Maine instead of Warrior Head Coach Paul McNulty. Their program began in 1969 and they have 95 boys in the program playing on three teams -- freshman, JV and varsity.

Wilton, a public high school in Fairfield County, won the Connecticut Division 1 state title in 1995, 1998 and 1999, and lost in the finals last year.

Pirates' one good quarter can't beat Chapel Hill's three
(March 13, 2001)

The Pirates took 20 minutes and 35 seconds to score their first goal against Chapel Hill on Tuesday, March 13, while the Tigers were scoring six goals of their own over the same span.

The Tigers added one more for good measure before the halftime to make it 7-1 after two quarters in which the Pirates looked sluggish and anything but intense. Andy DeLamielleure's goal on a Laurence Tilley assist at 3:25 of the second quarter was the only offense the Pirates could muster in the first half of the game in Chapel Hill's newly refurbished digs.

The Tigers came out of the box as hot as the Pirates were cool. Goals by Scott Morris and Chris Boyle in the first period made it 2-0 Chapel Hill, and two by Nick Woods and one each by Shawn Handy, Joe Tynan and another by Morris made it 7-1 at the half.

The third-quarter version of the Pirates was a different one altogether. A quick unassisted goal by Chris Feifs, who had missed two games due to injury, made it 7-2, but Chapel Hill's Jason Merritt quickly made it a six-goal margin again at 8-2.

Another unassisted goal by Feifs, a Graham Murray goal on a Tilley assist and a DeLamielleure goal on a Kevin Raspet assist made it 8-5 with 4:54 left in the third quarter. Three dramatic saves by Richard Ladd in the closing seconds of the quarter preserved the 3-goal margin.

The Pirate comeback stalled, though, in the fourth when they could muster no goals despite good defense and several opportunities. Another Shawn Handy goal with 1:52 made the final score 9-5.

Pirates avenge 2000 loss with 17-6 bombing of Providence
(March 9, 2001)

The circumstances were eerily similar. In 2000, Providence came to Riverside to face the Pirates, who took the field without one of its top scorers when midfielder Jon Ham had to sit out with a knee injury. Providence upset Riverside 7-6 that night last spring.

On Friday night, it was midfielder Chris Feifs, the Pirates' top goal scorer before straining a quadricep, who had to sit out the Providence game. Would history repeat itself in 2001? Think again.

Any thoughts of deja vu for Providence fans were dashed by the end of the first quarter when the scoreboard read 6-2 Riverside. Graham Murray opened the scoring with a shoveled-in shot in front of the Panther goal at 9:57, followed by an unassisted goal by Kevin Raspet at 9:06. Cory Coffman juked a Panther midfielder and scored unassisted at 7:25 to make it 3-0.

Providence's Zack Bridges scored at 6:39 to make it 3-1, quickly followed by a Laurence Tilley goal on an assist from Raspet tp make it 4-1. Another good dodging goal unassisted by Coffman and an unassisted goal by Tilley made it 6-1 at 5:04. Providence's Matt Wiesmore scored at 3:26 in an extra-man situation to make it 6-2 at the quarter.

Riverside outscored the Panthers 4-1 in the second period on goals by Murray on a high shot just above the Providence goalie's right shoulder at 9:00, another Raspet to Tilley goal at 4:17, a Raspet goal on an assist by Anthony Howard at 2:45 and a goal by Andy DeLamielleure at 2:17 to make it 10-2 Riverside. Providence added a goal at :16 in another extra-man situation when Eric Kempter scored to make it 10-3 at the half.

The third quarter was another 4-1 advantage for Riverside. Goals by Raspet at 11:27, Murray on a Coffman assist at 11:13 and Coffman on a Tilley assist at 10:24 made it 13-3. Riverside had a man advantage after Providence was called for having seven men in the offensive zone but couldn't take advantage.

At 7:01 Riverside goalie Richard Ladd was called for a penalty and that gave Providence another exta-man advantage. He was replaced by Zach Brewer, who kept the Panthers out of the goal during his stint.

At 4:46 of the third quarter Providence's Dan Carlson scored to make it 13-4. Riverside capped the third quarter scoring at :15 when Murray shot from 20 yards out and scored to make it 14-4.

Riverside opened the final period scoring with a goal by Raspet on a Tilley assist at 11:40. Providence answered quickly when Carlson scored again at 10:57 to make it 15-5. Goals by Madison Thompson on a Tilley assist at 7:52, and Monty Montsinger at 4:35 ended Riverside's scoring for the night. A final goal by Providence's Bridges at 1:53 made it 17-6.

DA's 7-goal 4th quarter puts Pirates away 12-4
(March 8, 2001)

For three quarters the Riverside Pirates kept it close against the Durham Academy Cavaliers on Thursday, but a 7-goal blitz by DA in the fourth quarter ended all hopes of a Pirate upset.

Sophomore midfielder Cory Coffman had two goals for the Pirates, sophomore midfielder Anthony Howard and senior attackman Laurence Tilley added one each.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard first at 10:27 of the first quarter when Cory Coffman scored unassisted. The Pirate defense played well in the first quarter, forcing several failure to advances and getting numerous LBCs.

Several chances went awry for the Pirates in the first half of the first quarter, and then, at 4:04, DA's Nick Roberts scored unassisted to tie the game at 1-1. Two minutes later, DA's Andrew Moon scored unassisted to put the Cavaliers up 2-1, which is how the first period ended.

Twenty seconds into the second quarter DA's Ben Mark made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal, but Anthony Howard pulled Riverside to within one on an assist from Laurence Tilley at 10:04.

Two quick goals by DA -- by Brian Dibbert unassisted at 9:44 and by John Hall unassisted at 5:11, put DA up 5-2.

At 2:32, though, DA doubled up on Andy DeLamielleure behind the goal and paid for it when DeLamielleure found an open Cory Coffman in front of the net to make it 5-3 at the half.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle with neither team scoring. The most excitement came at 4:30 when DA had seven men in the offensive zone. The refs missed it when DA Coach Joey Seivold cannily called a timeout before the refs could count his players.

The fourth quarter was all DA. The Cavaliers scored five unanswered goals, most on their trademark fast breaks. At 9:05 Hall scored unassisted, then Matt Wilson unassisted at 6:37, followed by Andrew Moon unassisted at 5:33, Ben Mark unassisted at 4:33, and Nick Roberts assisted by Elliot Howell at 2:29 to make it 10-3.

The DA run was stopped by a goal from Laurence Tilley with 39 seconds remaining in the game. Tilley came from around the right side of the DA goal and forced one in over the goalie's shoulder to make it 10-4.

But even with mere seconds remaining, DA wasn't done. Mark Chandler scored at with 23 seconds left on an assist from Wilson to make it 11-4, and then, with one second remaining, Chandler scored again, this time on an assist from Peter Elkins-Williams.

Pirates open 2001 season with 13-1 win over S.E. Raleigh
(March 2, 2001)

The 2001 version of the Riverside Pirates lacrosse team began their spring campaign in Raleigh with a 13-1 win over the Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs.

Junior midfielder Chris Feifs led all scorers with four goals, followed by junior midfielder Kevin Raspet who had three goals and three assists. Junior attackman Madison Thompson scored three goals, senior attackman Laurence Tilley had two goals and two assists and sophomore midfielder Cory Coffman added a goal and two assists.

Though the Pirates exhibited ragged play in their first outing of the season, the result was never in doubt. They were up 4-0 after the first quarter on two of Raspet's goals, one of Tilley's and one of Feifs'.

Feifs drew first blood at the 6:44 mark with an unassisted goal, then, in the final 45 seconds of the period, the Pirates scored three quick goals. At the 445 second mark, Raspet scored unassisted. Then, with 33 seconds left, Raspet assisted on a Tilley goal to make it 3-0. And 23 seconds later Raspet again scored unassisted to make it 4-0.

The Pirate defense again held the Bulldogs scoreless in the second quarter while adding three more goals of their own. Pirate goalie Richard Ladd had five saves in the first two periods. At the 10:39 mark Feifs scored unassisted to make it 5-0. After the Pirates managed to kill off a double penalty on Coffman, Feifs scored again unassisted at the 6:26 mark to make it 6-0. First-half scoring ended with 1:53 left on the clock as Raspet scored in a Coffman assist to make it 7-0 at mid-game break.

The Pirates' dominance can be seen in the first-half statistics. They had 39 ground balls to the Bulldogs' 13, and 26 shots on goal to Southeast's 8.

The Pirate scoring in the third quarter began with an unassisted Feifs goal at 10:29. That was followed by three quick goals by Madison Thompson, one at 7:55 on a Raspet assist, another at 7:30 on a Tilley assist and yet another a 4:30 on a Coffman assist. Tilley ended the third-quarter scoring at 3:47 with a goal on an assist from Raspet to make it 12-0 at the end of three periods.

Riverside scored one goal in the final period on a nice give-and-go play that began on a break with a Coffman pass to Tilley, then back to Coffman for the score. The Bulldogs got on the board late in the game on an unassisted goal by midfielder Neil Bonnestell to make the final score 13-1.
