Riverside, down 8-4 late in the third quarter, found the heart to come back from almost sure defeat and outscore the valiant Chapel Hill Tigers 6-1 in the next 15 minutes, including Anthony Howard's goal at 3:05 in sudden-death overtime to give Riverside its fourth state championship. Cory Coffman scored five goals and was named the game's offensive MVP. David Russell, Chapel Hill's goalie, was named the defensive MVP for his 17 saves, seven of them in the first period. | Chapel Hill wins PAC-6 final over Riverside 11-7

Cory Coffman: 5 goals |
Chris Feifs: 2 goals |
Riverside never seemed to get into any kind of flow on Thursday, May 2, in the PAC-6 tournament final, and fell to the Chapel Hill Tigers 11-7 in the title game for the third straight year. Mistakes (three botched clears led to fast-break Chapel Hill goals, for example) and the Tigers' zone defense conspired to end the Pirates' 9-game win streak heading into the state playoffs.

Chris Feifs scores in first quarter against Orange in the PAC-6 semifinal game on April 30

Riverside and Chapel Hill will play the latest installment of their annual battle for the PAC-6 tournament tonight at Chapel Hill at 7:30 p.m. The 17-2 Pirates are the No. 1 seed, while the 13-3 Tigers are the second seed. Riverside got to the championship game by beating Orange 18-2 in the first game of the PAC-6 tournament on April 30, while Chapel Hill defeated Jordan 8-5 in the other semifinal game. As was the case last year, many think tonight's game is a preview of the NCHSLA championship game this year. Last year it was Chapel Hill that won the PAC-6 but lost the state championship to Riverside. [Orange game story]
