The game, consisting of 20-minute running quarters, began at 5 p.m. under threatening skies and in gusting winds, but, fortunately, the rain held off until the game was over. Owen Ham began the scoring with two quick goals to put Purple up 2-0. But Tate answered with his first goal to make it 2-1. Ham scored again to make it 3-1, but Monty Montsinger scored to make bring White to within one at 3-2. Duran Green scored to make it 4-2 in Purple's favor as the first quarter ended.
The Purple team scored three unanswered goals in the second period before White could get anything going. Adam Whitfield, taking a break from Marine duties in South Carolina, scored unassisted, followed by an unassisted goal by Jon Ham, and another by Whitfield on an assist from Cory Coffman to make it 7-2 Purple. Tate scored for White on an assist from Scott Gordon to make it 7-3 and Jon Ham scored again on an assist from Andy DeLamielleure as the half ended with the score 8-3.
Tate got White on track quickly, backing in for a score early in the third period to make it 8-4, but Evan Leekley added one for Purple to make it 9-4. Ned Phillips stole a pass at the restraining line and scored for White to make it 9-5, but DeLamielleure answered with an unassisted score to make it 10-5.
Tate scored for White on an assist from Bradley Shore, rolling the ball in low to cut the White lead to 10-6. Tate scored again a few minutes later on a multiple-fake move to make it 10-7. Anthony Howard padded the Purple lead with a left-handed shot to make it 11-7. Two unanswered goals by White, one by Shore on a feed from Laurence Tilley and another unassisted by Scott Gordon made it 11-9 as third period ended.
Though White had cut the Purple lead to two goals, in the fourth period the Purple team outscored White 4-1. Nic Tyndall scored rushing in from the right side, Owen Ham scored on a Coffman assist and Steve Knopp scored left-handed and unassisted to make it 14-9. Tilley scored for White on an assist from Montsinger to make it 14-10, and Coffman closed out the game with a goal at the buzzer to make the final score 15-10.
Playing in goal for Purple was James Zawadowski. Playing goal for White were Brian Ring in the first half and Rich Ladd in the second half. The oldest codger in the game was former 1995 Pirate Matt Plumer. The youngest pup in the game was Andy Ross, who doesn't graduate until 2005.
