He joins Jordan's Howard and McGeary for recognition on first team

Bob Kercher takes a shot in the Duke Team Challenge Camp on Saturday
Riverside's Bob Kercher, who will be a junior next year, was named to the Duke Team Challenge Camp's all-tournament first team on Sunday after Team Carolina went 7-1 against some very stiff competition. Also named from the Triangle were attackman Joe Howard and longstick middie Mike McGeary, both rising seniors at Jordan.

Named to the first team as well, and also named the tournament MVP, was attackman Tommy D'Alessandro of Charlotte Country Day.

Team Carolina, a fusion of high school talent from the Triangle, the Triad and Charlotte, was the top-seeded team in Sunday's championship game at Duke. They fell to Delbarton (NJ) 5-4 on Sunday morning, a team they had defeated 9-3 on Saturday in their third game of the tournament. They ended the tournament in second place in the A-Division. Next up for Team Carolina is Champ Camp in Baltimore on July 28.
White downs Purple 11-10 in overtime
Bid by Purple to come back from four goals down falls just short
Posted June 19, 2005, 1:30 p.m.

The Purple team, down 9-5 after three quarters, outscored White 5-1 in the fourth period to force overtime, but Greg Tate's unassisted goal one minute into OT gave White the 11-10 win in the 2005 Riverside lacrosse annual alumni game on June 18, 2005.

BOX SCORE
White: Greg Tate 3g 2a, Chris Feifs 3g 1a, Jon Ham 2g, Scott Gordon 1g, Madison Thompson 1g, Adam Whitfield 1g, Graham Murray 1a. James Zawadowski 7 saves.
Purple: Cory Coffman 3g 1a, Owen Ham 1g 2a, Laurence Tilley 2g, Andy Delamielleure 1g 1a, Eric Poston 1g, Matt Plumer 1g, Monte Montsinger 1g, Anthony Howard 1a. Zach Brewer 10 saves.
The game began on a high note for the White team when Chris Feifs won the opening faceoff and scored only seconds into the 20-minute running quarter to make it 1-0. Laurence Tilley made it 1-1 at the 16-minute mark with an unassisted goal for the Purple team, and Purple took the lead 2-1 at 12:57 when Owen Ham scored unassisted.

Purple, made up of alumni from odd-numbered years, stretched their lead to 3-1 at the 3:35 mark when Eric Poston scored on an assist from Anthony Howard. But White, consisting of graduates from even-numbered years, weren't about to swoon. Greg Tate scored his first goal with an unassisted shot at 2:35 and Jon Ham scored at 1:10 on a Tate assist to tie the game at 3-3 as the first period ended.

White broke the tie shortly after the opening faceoff of the second period as Scott Gordon scored unassisted to make it 4-3, but Purple tied it at 4-4 at 18:06 when Matt Plumer scored on a Cory Coffman assist. White went up again 5-4 at 7:47 when Jon Ham scored on a Tate assist, only to see the game tied at 5-5 at 3:36 when Tilley scored on an Owen Ham assist. Madison Thompson gave White the halftime lead when he scored on an unassisted left-hander at 1:43 to make it 6-5 at the break.

Purple seemed to go to sleep in the third period as they were outscored 3-0 by White, all of these goals coming in the final minute of the period. With 46.6 seconds left Fiefs scored unassisted, then at 28.3 Tate scored unassisted and with 1 second remaining Adam Whitfield scored on a Graham Murray assist to make it 9-5 after three periods.

White seemed it would continue that streak when, at 19:45 of the fourth period Feifs scored unassisted to make it 10-5. That's when Purple roused from their slumber. Coffman scored two in a row, both unassisted, at 17:55 and 17:07, followed by a Monte Montsinger goal on a Delamielleure assist, followed by another Coffman unassisted goal at 6:22, and finally capped by a Delamielleure goal on an Owen Ham assist at 5:26 to tie the game at 10-10.

Neither team could manage the winning goal in regulation, but only a minute into overtime Greg Tate leaped high and shot down on the goal to give White the win.

In goal for White was James Zawadowski, who had 7 saves. In goal for Purple was Zach Brewer, who had 10 saves (these are very unofficial save stats).

Thirty alumni returned to play in the game on Saturday. They were: Monty Montsinger, Cory Coffman, Owen Ham, Nick Wallhauser, Madison Thompson, Graham Murray, Kyle Radack, Joey Pietrantoni, Andy Delamielleure, Adam Roberts, Ned Phillips, Mark Hamilton, Laurence Tilley, Adam Whitfield, Kevin Radack, Rich Ladd, Scott Gordon, Robert Douglass, James Zawadowski, Jon Ham, Matt Plumer, Greg Tate, Chris Feifs, Eric Poston, Anthony Howard, Bryan Van Dyke, Chris Whitfield, Zach Brewer, Lloyd Miller and Joe Miller. Lloyd Miller has the distinction of being the oldest player in this year's game, having graduated in 1993. He was a member of Riverside's first lacrosse team and was it's first all-state player. They youngest player in the game Saturday was Bob Kercher (2007), who played on both teams to help with a shortage of midfielders.

Alvin Black (right) shoots at point-blank range against Hoggard in the NCHSLA tournament first round
The Hoggard Vikings, 13th seeded in the North Carolina High School Lacrosse Association tournament, came in as the underdog to play the 4th seeded Riverside Pirates on Friday, May 10, 2005, and came away with a one-goal win. It was the earliest exit for the Pirates ever in the state tournament.

Down 5-3 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Vikings scored five goals in that period to Riverside's two to take home an 8-7 win. Riverside had a 7-6 lead with 8:27 to go but two unassisted goals by Hoggard's Fielding Brown gave the Vikings their 8-7 lead with 4:17 left.

The Pirates had the ball most of the remaining minutes and even had a man-up for the final 20.8 seconds. However, two big saves by Hoggard goalie Ross Pepperman, one on a Lowell Dyer shot at 3:03 and one on a Joey Pietrantoni shot with one second remaining in the game, ensured the win.

Riverside jumped to a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Alvin Black on a Bob Kercher assist and Doug Cook on a Tim Woolley assist. They went up 3-0 early in the second period after Andy Ross scored on a Pietrantoni assist. But Hoggard cut the lead to two when Daniel Fortier scored on a Jeff McMillen assist at 8:45. Riverside's Pietrantoni made it a three-goal lead again at 2:52 when he scored on a Ross assist to make it 4-1. But Hoggard scored quickly after winning the ensuing faceoff as Kyle Treman scored unassisted at 2:32 to make it 4-2 at the half.

Each team scored one goal in the third period, Hoggard's on a Treman shot on a McMillen assist at 10:59 and Riverside's on Tim Woolley shot on a Kercher assist at 9:10 to make it 5-3 Riverside at the end of the third period.

That's when Hoggard came alive and Riverside got sluggish. At 11:37 of the fourth period Michael Rode scored on a McMillen assist to make it 5-4. Riverside answered at 9:50 as Lowell Dyer muscled his way to the goal for an unassisted shot to make it 6-4. At 9:10 Hoggard scored in a man-up as Rode hit paydirt on a Treman assist, and at 8:34 the Vikings scored in another man-up situation to tie the game 6-6 as McMillen scored on a Treman assist.

Pietrantoni gave Riverside the lead again at 7:21 on an Andy Ross assist to make it 7-6. At 6:57 Fielding Brown drove unassisted to make it 7-7, and then at 4:17 he did the same thing, only this time it was the game-winner, giving Hoggard the 8-7 win.

Kyle Massey (19) clears for Riverside as Matt Little (8) defends for Jordan in the PAC-VI tournament final
The third time was the charm for the Jordan Falcons -- which had lost to heart-breaking multiple-overtime games to Riverside this year -- as they defeated the Pirates 8-4 to win the PAC-VI Tournament on May 5, 2005 at Chapel Hill.

The Falcons stretched a 3-2 halftime lead to 7-4 by the end of the third period and held on the rest of the way. The Pirates, bedeviled by penalties (10 in all, eight in the second half) and unable to hit the net when they had shots (they hit four pipes and mis-shot on several close tries), couldn't make up the difference in the late going. Key saves by Jordan's Sam Reynolds in the fourth quarter ensured the win for the Falcons.

Riverside scored first as Tim Woolley scored unassisted at 7:50 of the first period. Riverside dominated possession the the first period and also in the second, but could only manage one goal in each period. Both goalies were factors in the first period as Riverside's Max Cheatham denied shots by Joe Howard twice, and one each by Brandon Marks and Mike McGeary in the first period. Sam Reynolds also had four saves in the first period.

Riverside led 1-0 at the end of one, but Jordan didn't wait long in the second to even the score. After a faceoff win by Little, three Riverside defenders did an "I've got him, you take him" and let Scot MacIver go straight to the cage uncontested to tie the game 1-1.

At 7:33 Bob Kercher scored on a Tim Woolley feed to put Riverside back up 2-1, but at 4:38 Jordan, in an unsettled situation scored as Little fed MacIver to tie the game 2-2. At 2:52 Jordan got the first of two extra-man goals as Howard scored on an assist from Ben Feldman to make it 3-2 at the half. Cheatham had four more saves for the Pirates in that period.

The third period opened much like the second. Little won the faceoff and 11 seconds later Howard scored unassisted on a turnaround goal to make it 4-2. An unassisted Kercher goal at 6:09 cut it to one, 4-3, but Jordan got another extra-man goal at 5:19 as McGeary scored on a Feldman assist to put Jordan back up by two, 5-3.

At 2:05 Brandon Marks scored on a Brian Reynolds assist to make it 6-3, but Riverside responded quickly as Andy Ross drove to the goal and scored unassisted at 1:41 to make it 6-4. With 44 seconds left, Brian Reynolds scored on a Feldman assist right after they gained possession when Riverside didn't back up its own shot at the other end of the field. It was 7-4 as the third period ended.

At 10:37 Jordan's John Day scored unassisted after a Riverside clearing pass went straight to a Jordan player. That made it 8-4, the final score. At one point Riverside was down two men at the 8:32 mark but managed to kill one of those when another flag was thrown and they went down two again. They managed to kill all three penalties but couldn't get on the board at the other end.

In the last four minutes Jordan goalie Sam Reynolds had four saves, two on Doug Cook and one each on Pietrantoni and Tim Woolley. The Falcons ran out the clock for the final three minutes to get the win.

Max Cheatham finished with 12 saves for Riverside. Reynolds had 11 for Jordan. The Pirates won 45 ground balls to Jordan's 23, but the Falcons outshot Riverside 29 to 24. Jordan won 10 of 14 faceoffs.

Alvin Black scores one of his four goals against Northern in the PAC-VI Tournament semifinal game
The Riverside Pirates rolled over Northern 20-0 on Tuesday, May 3, 2005, setting up a PAC-VI Tournament Championship game against Jordan, which came from behind to defeat Chapel Hill 13-12, also on May 3.

Top scorers for Riverside were Alvin Black with 4g; Lowell Dyer with 3g, 2a; Tim Woolley with 1g, 4a; Colin Cash with 3g, 1a; Bob Kercher with 1g, 3a; Philip Tieszen with 2g, 1a, and Jonathan Beck had 2g. Andy Ross, Doug Cook and Joey Pietrantoni each had 1g, 1a, and Matthew Tieszen had 1g.

Riverside led 6-0 after one period and 15-0 after two. Starters sat the bench for most of the second half as many players got to see field time, some for the first time in a varsity game. In the second half, Colin Cash had three goals, and Jonathan Beck and Matthew Tieszen each added one.

The Pirates had 61 ground balls and 23 shots in the game. Riverside goalie Max Cheatham had two saves in the contest. Northern goalie Nathan Farabee had 12 saves against the Pirates. Joey Pietrantoni had 9 ground balls to lead the Pirates in that category, followed by Bob Kercher with 7. Pietrantoni won 9 ofd 10 faceoffs, Jonathan Beck won 10 of 12 faceoffs and Sam Cordones won 1 of 2.

In the night's late game, Chapel Hill jumped out 4-2 against Jordan in the first quarter and led 7-6 at the half. The Tigers got it to 9-7 but Jordan tied it 9-9 by the end of the third period. With 1:36 left Jordan had a 13-10 lead but unassisted goals by Shane Nouri and Nick Desper made it 13-12 with 12.9 left. The time ran out on the faceoff scrum but the CH coaches argued that a Jordan player released early at the 2.5 second mark but the refs didn't see it.

Joe Howard had 5 goals and 3 assists for Jordan, Ben Feldman had 3g, 2a; Mike McGeary had 2g; Scot MacIvor had 2g and 2a; Grier Allison had 1g, and Matt Little had 1a. For Chapel Hill Nouri had 3g, 3a; Al Mask had 2g; Desper had 1g, 2a; Graham Georges had 1g, 1a; Casey Leeper, Chet Corey, R.J. Crumpler, Will Scroggs and Logan Corey each had 1g.

Chapel Hill dominated faceoffs early, but Matt Little came back and won his share late in the game when it counted. Three Falcons were injured in this game, Dan Nifong (who came back in), Jesse Gellerson (who didn't) and Matt Little (who came back in after a rest).

Jordan finally took the lead at 10-9 with 8:11 left on a Howard goal. They pushed it to 12-9 on goals by Allison and Howard. A furious CH comeback fell short, however. Both goalies played great games. Don't have save totals but Jordan's Sam Reynolds had 8 in the second half by my count.

Chapel Hill's Nick Desper tackles Riverside's Murray Forbes (20) at the close of the second period. A flag was thrown and a penalty was served when the second half began.
It was Senior Night and the Pirates were wearing their new uniforms for the first time. After going up 2-0 early in the first quarter it looked like a long night for the Chapel Hill Tigers. But a five-goal third period put the Tigers ahead to stay as they cruised to a 10-4 win and avenge their 8-4 loss to Riverside 10 days earlier.

Tim Woolley, who got a ground ball at midfield, raced toward the goal and scored unassisted at 6:45 of the first period to give Riverside a 1-0 lead. About a minute later, Doug Cook scored on a Lowell Dyer assist to make it 2-0 with 5:35 left.

Then came a stretch where the Pirates threw the ball out of bounds three straight times and were called for a failure to advance. at 1:51. Sixteen seconds later, Chapel Hill's R.J. Crumpler scored the first of his three goals, this one unassisted at 1:35 to make it 2-1.

The Pirates scored first in the second period also, with Alvin Black scoring off a rebound of a Tim Woolley shot that had been saved by Tiger goalie David Hartzell. That made it 3-1 with 4:53 left in the half.

At 4:03 William Scroggs scored on a Graham Georges assist to make it 3-2 Riverside. Nick Desper scored unassisted with 18.6 seconds remaining in the half to tie the score at 3-3. It could have been worse. At 3:09 Riverside goalie Max Cheatham made a save on a Chapel Hill shot but the Pirates passed straight into a Chapel Hill stick on the clear. Moments later, at 2:47, Cheatham made another save, this time of a Desper shot, that kept a sure Chapel Hill goal off the board.

The Tigers came out as hot as the Pirates were cold in the third quarter. They scored five goals to Riverside's one and put the game away. Crumpler scored unassisted at 10:11, Shane Nouri scored unassisted at 8:35, Nouri scored again on a nifty turnaround shot at 7:17, and Crumpler scored unassisted at 4:21 to make it 8-3. Riverside's single goal of the period, and its last of the game, came on a nice feed from Tim Woolley to Andy Ross at 3:18 to make it 8-4.

The Tigers added two more in the final period, Nouri from Georges at 9:42 and Desper from 15 yards crossing left to right, the same shot he used on his other two scores for the night.

Cheatham had five saves in the game for Riverside. Chapel Hill's Hartzell had 10 saves for the Tigers. Riverside's Joey Pietrantoni won 14 of 17 faceoffs and led the Pirates in ground balls with 12. Murray Forbes led Riverside in LBCs with eight.

The Pirates and the Jordan Falcons had another heart-stopping game on Tuesday, April 26, with Riverside coming from three goals down and winning in overtime for the second time against Jordan as Lowell Dyer scored the winning goal unassisted with 43.5 seconds remaining in the second OT.

Riverside defenseman Murray Forbes (20) and Jordan attackman Joe Howard (12) in the first quarter of Tuesday's game
Riverside had a 1-minute extra-man opportunity with 2:53 remaining in the second overtime but couldn't capitalize on it. With 2:01 remaining Jordan's Mike McGeary got a crucial ground ball and cleared into the Riverside end. But Kyle Rooney got the biggest ground ball of his career at 1:51 when he picked up a loose ball and cleared it into the Riverside end.

With 1:43 remaining Jordan was called for a trip and gave Riverside another extra-man try, but still they couldn't get close to scoring against the Jordan defense. At 1:18, after two very errant passes, Riverside's Joey Pietrantoni discovered his stick was broken and managed to call a timeout with possession. He took the opportunity to get a new stick and gave the Riverside coaches a chance to set up a play.

That play, if it was what was called in the huddle, seemed to be to clear out for Dyer, who was covered by Jordan's Matt Little. With about an 80-pound or more advantage, Dyer muscled his way to the goal, turned and put the winner in.

Dyer finished with two goals. Leading the Pirates was Alvin Black, who scored his four goals all in a row during a crucial period of the game. Pietrantoni had three goals, an assist, 19 ground balls and 10 faceoffs. Most of those faceoffs came later in the game after he solved the puzzle of Matt Little's effective faceoff technique. Bob Kercher had two goals, Doug Cook had two assists and Andy Ross and Tim Woolley each had an assist. Riverside goalie Max Cheatham had 13 saves, four of those in the first overtime.

For Jordan, Joe Howard finished with four goals and two assists, Little had three goals and an assist, Scot MacIver had two goals and Ben Feldman had a goal and an assist. Jordan goalie Sam Reynolds had eight saves, none bigger than the two he had with less than a minute to play in regulation. He stopped an Andy Ross shot and also the rebound shot by Black to keep the score at 10-10.

Jordan scored first with Howard scoring on a McGeary assist at 7:20 of the first period in a man-up. Riverside responded at 5:42 when Pietrantoni scored on a Doug Cook assist to tie the game at 1-1. Howard scored again at 4:01 on an assist from Ben Feldman to put Jordan up 2-1. The Falcons extended that lead when Little scored unassisted to make it 3-1 Jordan with 3:53 left in the period. Riverside's Kercher cut the lead to 3-2 at 1:20 with an unassisted shot.

In the second period Jordan went up 4-2 when Scot MacIver scored on a Howard assist at 9:52 in transition after a Riverside clearing pass went directly to Howard at midfield. Pietrantoni made it 4-3 when he scored unassisted at 9:06. At the 4:39 mark Black scored the first of his four consecutive goals on a Doug Cook assist to tie the score at 4-4.

Black scored again at 4:28 on a Woolley assist with an effective high-low fake to put Riverside ahead 5-4. At 3:58, after getting the ball at Jordan's GLE, Little ran all the way up the field unmolested by the Riverside defense and scored unassisted to make it 5-5. Howard's unassisted goal at 2:04 put Jordan ahead 6-5 as the half ended.

It looked as if Riverside had run out of gas as the second half began. Jordan scored two unanswered to up 8-5. Feldman scored unassisted at 10:42 after his Riverside defender fell in wet grass and left him alone in front of the goal, and MacIver scored in a nice feed from Little at 8:05 to put Jordan up three. Meanwhile, Riverside couldn't seem to clear the ball and was making careless passes directly to Jordan players.

The bad spell for Riverside was broken after Andy Ross cleared the ball the length of the field and passed to Black who scored to make it 6-8. Black scored unassisted at 3:21 after an LBC by Riverside defenseman Murray Forbes gave the Pirates the ball. That made it 7-8. But Jordan pushed it back up to a two-goal lead with only 8.8 seconds remaining when Howard scored unassisted after receiving a pass directly from a Riverside defenseman tyring to clear the ball. That made it 9-7 as the fourth period ended.

It didn't take Riverside long to respond. Pietrantoni won the faceoff, passed to Tim Woolley who passed to Black. Black dodged his Jordan defender and scored at 11:51 to cut the Jordan lead to 1, 8-9. At the 8:19 mark, Riverside's Kercher tied the score at 9-9 on a turn-around left-handed shot. But Jordan responded at 7:05 with a goal by Little on a Howard assist to put Jordan back up 10-9.

Riverside goalie Max Cheatham kept it at a one-goal margin when he saved a McGeary shot at 6:23. Riverside had a 30-second EMO opportunity at 4:47 when Jordan's goalie was called for a hold. But with a cold goalie in the Jordan cage, Riverside never got off a shot. Another Jordan penalty allowed Jordan get its starting goalie back in the goal just in time for Reynolds to make a big save on a Kercher shot at 3:35.

But with 3:26 left, Pietrantoni scored his third goal of the night unassisted, putting a rebound of a Kercher shot past the Falcon goalie to tie the game at 10-10. Jordan's Reynolds made his two biggest saves of the night as he stopped consecutive shots by Andy Ross and Alvin Black at the 50-second mark to preserve the tie and force an overtime.

Riverside's Cheatham made four saves in the first overtime, stopping a Little shot at 3:32, a McGeary shot at 52 seconds, at MacIver shot at 4.4 seconds and another MacIver shot with .6 seconds remaining.

Riverside had two extra-man opportunities in the second overtime but couldn't score in either. At 1:18 Pietrantoni called a timeout due to a broken stick, which allowed Riverside to regroup and Pietrantoni to replace his stick. Once the ball was put back in play it was given to Lowell Dyer behind the goal. The other Riverside players moved up top and left Dyer defended by Little behind the cage. Dyer kept backing in until he had rounded the left side of the goal, then turned and shot a bouncer that went into the net for the winning goal with 43.5 seconds remaining.

Riverside ended the game with 59 ground balls to Jordan's 31. Jordan outshot Riverside 32 to 24.
