Pirates rebound over Western 10-8
Riverside plays hard, comes from behind to defeat Hornets
Posted Mar. 24, 2005, 11:00 p.m.

The Riverside Pirates, looking much better on Thursday, March 24, than they did on Tuesday, March 22, defeated a tough Western Guilford team 10-8, coming from behind to do it.

Box Score
Stats

Joey Pietrantoni
3 goals, 13 faceoffs

Bob Kercher
2 goals, 14 GBs

Andy Ross
2 goals, 1 assist

Doug Cook
2 goals, 1 assist
Riverside scored first when Tim Woolley took a feed from Doug Cook at 10:27 of the first period to put Riverside up 1-0. But Western took control the rest of the period and scored three unanswered. Taylor Mendoza scored unassisted at 7:32, and then Austin Claytor, who couldn't be stopped when the Pirates played the Hornets at the Battle of the Beach in November, scored two unassisted to make it 3-1. At 2:54 it looked as if the Hornets had taken a 4-1 lead, but Claytor's apparent goal was waved off as he was ruled in the crease, leaving the score at 3-1 at the end of the first period. Hornet goalie Scott Bowles had four of his 17 saves in the final five minutes of the period to preserve the lead for Western.

The Pirates came out hot in the second period, scoring two quick goals to tie the game at 3-3. Bob Kercher scored unassisted at 10:37 and then Joey Pietrantoni scored on a Kercher assist at 9:30. The Hornets came right back though as Kellen Edenfield scored on an assist from Daniel Markowski at 8:52 and then Claytor scored a third goal on an assist from Matt Hastings to put Western back up 5-3.

The Pirates didn't lose heart though as they scored three unanswered in a 1:10 span to go up 6-5. Pietrantoni scored on a Tim Woolley assist at 4:44, Kercher scored on a smooth dodge unassisted at 4:31 and then Doug Cook scored unassisted at 3:33. At 3:15, however, Western's Stephen Krasicky scored unassisted to tie the game before the half ended.

The Pirates scored two unanswered in the third period as Cook scored unassisted at 11:37 on a rebound of a shot by Andy Ross to make it 7-6. Then Ross scored unassisted at 6:22 to make it 8-6. Edenfield pulled the Hornets back to within one, however, with an unassisted goal at 4:32. At the 1:08 mark it looked as if Claytor had tied the game at 8-8 but the goal was waved off as he was ruled in the crease for a second time. The period ended with Riverside up 8-7.

The Pirates began the final period as they began the third, by scoring two quick goals unanswered. At 10:36 Andy Ross scored unassisted, followed a minute later by Joey Pietrantoni's unassisted goal at 9:34 to make it 10-7 Riverside. But Edenfield again cut the margin back to two goals when he scored unassisted for the Hornets to make it 10-8, the final score.

The drama wasn't over, though, even if the scoring was. The Hornets were called for two non-releaseable unsportsmanlike conduct fouls that overlapped by 16 seconds. But the Pirates couldn't manage a goal during the penalty period.

The Hornets made a valiant effort to close the gap, but some key saves by Riverside goalkeeper Brad Smith in the final five minutes preserved the win.

In what Riverside fans hope becomes a tradition at their home games, two Air Force ROTC cadets from Riverside, 1st Lt. Anthony Whaver and 2nd Lt. Timothy Aull, fired off a cannon every time the Pirates scored. It made for a festive atmosphere. There's nothing like the smell of cordite and stinky lacrosse equipment on a cool spring night. It smells like victory.
Pirates blitzed by East Chapel Hill 10-1
Nothing worked for the Pirates who didn't score until final 3 minutes
Posted Mar. 22, 2005, 11:30 p.m.

The Riverside Pirates didn't score until 45 minutes into their game with East Chapel Hill, but by then they were down 10 goals and time was running out. East Chapel Hill went on to win this mismatch 10-1.

Box Score
Stats
The Pirates' defense held the Wildcats to 3 goals in the first half, but their offense could not get off track at all. The Pirates went scoreless for the first three quarters as the Wildcats scored 7 during that period.

In the final quarter the Pirates scored a single goal as East scored another three to make the final 10-1.

The Wildcats' Tony Mendes scored the first goal for East at 9:41 of the first, followed by Ben Greenlee unassisted at 8:15 and Dwight Weld unassisted at 41 seconds, to make it 3-0 after one quarter.

Neither team could manage a score in the second period, the high point of the game for the Pirates. In the third period Weld scored on a Mendes assist at 10:33, Bill Hayes scored on a Uly Lim assist at 8:17, Stuart Chescheir scored unassisted at 8:02 and Ryan Fisher scored unassisted at 6:15 to make it 7-0 at the end of three quarters.

In the final period East scored three to Riverside's lone goal. For East, Bob Tauchen scored unassisted at 10:10, Tim Kihlstrom scored unassisted at 8:31 and Vanya Almekinders scored unassisted at 3:30. Bob Kercher's goal for the Pirates at 3:03 was the only goal the Riverside offense could muster all night.

Balance was the word of the day for East as nine different players combined to score their 10 goals. Only Weld scored more than once. Also, only two of those goals were assisted.

Defensively, the Pirates were led by Murray Forbes with 7 ground balls and 6 LBCs. Goalie Brad Smith had 9 saves on the night.
Pirates rebound with 16-4 win over AACS
Pirates' play showed a day-and-night difference from game with Apex
Posted Mar. 19, 2005, 8 p.m.

The Riverside Pirates, fresh off a lackluster performance against Apex three days earlier, played with mid-season verve on Friday, March 18, to defeat Annapolis Area Christian School 16-4.

Box Score
Stats
The Pirates led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 5-1 at the half. But they knew they couldn't ease up because AACS was behind 5-2 at the half last year in this annual battle of coaching buddies and came back to win.

With that in mind the Pirates came out hot in the third period to score seven goals to AACS's one and put the game away.

Riverside opened the scoring in the game with an Alvin Black goal on a Bob Kercher assist at 11:50 following a won faceoff by Joey Pietrantoni, his first of 13 for the night. At 8:10 Tim Woolley hit Kercher to make it 2-0, and Black from Kercher made it 3-0 as the first period ended.

Andy Ross assisted Kercher at 11:49 of the second period and AACS got on the board at 6:19 when Drew Kuechler assisted on a Dave Castle extra-man goal. Castle would have three goals before the night was through. Jonathan Beck scored on a Kercher assist at 4:47 to end the scoring in the first half with Riverside up 5-1.

Pietrantoni scored on a Kercher assist at 11:50 of the third period to make it 6-1. But Castle scored gain for AACS on a Kuechler assist to make it 6-2 with 10:15 remaining in the period. But then Riverside went on a six-goal spree the rest of the period to make it 12-2 at the end of the third period.

Black scored at 9:18 on an assist from Lowell Dyer. Dyer would have a hand in four of the six goals as he scored unassisted on the next three. He pooched in a score off a rebound of a Tim Woolley shot at 8:55, came around the right side of the goal and forced one into the net at 7:50 and then came around the left side to do the same at 4:42. Kercher scored unassisted at 4:06 on a low-to-high rocket shot and Pietrantoni scored on a Tim Woolley assist during an extra-man situation with 21 seconds remaining in the period.

The Pirates got three more goals in the final period, but it was AACS that scored first in the final stanza when Kevin Thomas scored on a Cal Napolitano assist. Doug Cook scored on a Tim Woolley assist at 6:38, followed by another goal by AACS's Dave Castle unassisted at 6:06. Unassisted goals by Philip Tieszen, who got a nifty ground ball at midfield and took it all the way in at 5:09, and Doug Cook at 4:22 made it 15-2. A final goal, Brian Moran on an assist by Cook, made it a 16-4 final.

The Pirate defense, longpoles and defensive middies played well against AACS and much better than they played on Tuesday against Apex. Brad Smith registered nine saves on the night but none better than in the first half when an AACS middie stole the ball on a Riverside clear and came toward the goal. Smith stepped out about 10 yards to challenge and stuffed the ball for the save and got the ground ball for the outlet.

Another benefit for the Pirates was that the lead allowed many players to see the field for significant minutes. On the field at the end were Max Cheatham in goal, Brian Moran (who scored), Doug Cook (2 goals, 1 assist), Colin Cash, Derek Adrian, Matthew Tieszen and Bobby Trimble.
Apex defeats rusty Pirates 8-2
Pirates were scoreless for a half, had trouble with Apex's zone
Posted Mar. 16, 2005, 5 p.m.

For seven minutes of the first quarter on Tuesday, March 15, both the Riverside Pirates and the Apex Cougars looked as if they had early-season rustiness. But at the 5:34 mark Apex shook off its rust and scored the first of seven unanswered goals on the way to an 8-2 win.

Box Score
Stats
Neither team could score for the first half of the quarter as both teams passed balls out of bounds, dropped balls and shot wide. But Jordan Bryant's unassisted goal at 5:34 opened the floodgates for the Cougars. Less than a minute later Froggy Spinks scored unassisted at 4:32, followed by Nathan Tomlinson's unassisted goal at 1:58. Spinks' second goal with 3.9 seconds left followed an Apex timeout at the 21-second mark to set up a play and give Apex a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Apex scored two in the second period, one at 6:35 by John Gregory on a Tomlinson assist, and again with 5.2 seconds remaining in the half when Nick Patrone scored the first of his two goals unassisted to make it 6-0 at the half.

The second period was one of dropped balls and missed opportunities for the Pirates, who couldn't penetrate the Apex zone. Riverside was relegated to passing around the perimeter and occasionally taking a long shot against the zone for most of the period.

Apex scored at 9:34 of the third period when Patrone scored his second goal. At 8:34 Riverside finally got on the board as Bob Kercher scored unassisted at 8:34 to make it 7-1. On the positive note for Riverside, midfielder Joey Pietrantoni, who was playing for the first time this year, eased back into faceoffs with his sore thumb, ending the night winning seven of 10.

Apex scored its final goal of the night at 10:39 of the fourth period to make it 8-1, and Pietrantoni made it 8-2 with his goal, on an assist from Tim Woolley, with 9:41 remaining in the game.

Riverside played its best defense of the night for the final eight minutes, getting numerous LBCs and takeaways. But the offense couldn't manage a score as Apex goalie David Hetu made some critical saves down the stretch.
Mt. Tabor downs Pirates 7-6 in 2OTs
Riverside led 5-3 at half, stick problems plagued Pirates late
Posted Mar. 4, 2005, 11 p.m.

Daniel Pierce had the winning goal for Mt. Tabor at the 2:36 mark of the second overtime period on what was essentially an extra-man situation as Riverside defenseman Murray Forbes had to leave the field with a broken stick. Defenseman Ryan Taylor had tied the game for Mt. Tabor with 1:08 left in the fourth period on a fast-break goal that put the game into overtime.

The teams traded goals in the first period and entered the second quarter tied 2-2. Mt. Tabor's Jordan Wood scored the first of his three goals at 9:46 of the first period on an assist from Lawrence Piner. But Riverside's Kercher tied it at 1-1 with an unassisted goal at 9:10. Wood scored again for Mt. Tabor on a Daniel Pierce assist to make it 2-1, but Kercher again scored unassisted at :22 to make it 2-2.

Mt. Tabor drew first blood in the second period when Wood scored unassisted to make it 3-2 in Mt. Tabor's favor. But three unanswered by the Pirates, Kercher from Tim Woolley at 7:25, Alvin Black from Woolley at 5:55 and Woolley from Kercher at 5:00, made it 5-3 at the break.

Riverside went scoreless in the third period while Mt. Tabor's Mitch Megela scored on a Seth Crowell assist to make it 5-4 as the third period ended. In the fourth period Riverside made it 6-4 when Kercher scored his fourth goal unassisted at 4:27. But Mt. Tabor rallied for two goals in the last 1:30 to tie the game. Megela scored on a Steven Mann assist in an extra-man situation at 1:26 and Taylor scored his fast-break goal at 1:08.

Neither team scored in the first overtime, but in the second overtime period Mt. Tabor's Pieerce scored the winning goal on an assist by Megela as Riverside played 5-on-6 as defenseman Murray Forbes was on the sidelines trying to find another stick.

That wasn't the only stick problem Riverside had in this game. At the beginning of the fourth period Riverside's Andy Ross was called for an illegal stick (1/8 inch too long) and the Pirates were assessed a three-minute non-releasable penalty. They managed to kill that without allowing Mt. Tabor to score, however.
