The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders jumped out to a 3-1 lead by halftime of Saturday's 2A/3A championship game and could have quit scoring at that point and still come away with the victory. As it was, they scored three more times for a convincing 6-1 win over Western Guilford.
The Crusaders' Lance Landvater scored two minutes into the game to make it a 1-0 game. The teams traded possessions for most of the rest of the period until Gregg Ashland took a feed from Seph Secoura to make it 2-0 with 37 seconds left in the period.
Western Guilford dominated possession for much of the next period but just could find the net but the one time. At 4:04 of the second quarter the Hornets' Taylor Mendoza scored unassisted to make it a 2-1 game. But at 1:24 the Crusaders answered with a Secoura goal from longpole Reid McCrea, who had snagged a high Hornet pass at midfield, to make it 3-1 at the half.
Neither team could muster much offense in the third period, but at 2:38 Matt Shankle put Gibbons up 4-1 with an unassisted goal. At 1:00 Cameron Watts did the same to make it 5-1 as the third period ended.
The Crusaders scored at 11:30 of the final period to make it 6-1 when John Templeton scored on a Stephen Thorn assist. The Crusaders held off the Hornets through two man-downs over the next several minutes, coming away with the 6-1 victory and a state championship.
Gibbons' attackman Seph Secoura was named most valuable offensive player of the game. Gibbons goalie Merrick Reiland was name the most valuable defensive player.
