Lightning struck three times in the state 4A championship game on May 20, 2006, twice courtesy of Mother Nature and once courtesy of a dominating East Chapel Hill display offensively and defensively against the Chapel Hill Tigers.

East Chapel Hill jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter on goals by Chris Manning on a Vanya Almekinders assist, Tony Mendes unassisted and Matt Richmond on a Scot Meyer assist.
In the second period it got worse for the Tigers as the Wildcats scored four more goals to make it 7-0 at the half. Scoring in the second period were Meyer from Richmond, Richmond from Manning, Tim Kihlstrom unassisted and Mendes unassisted.

The Tigers were also blanked in the third period as Mendes scored unassisted, Richmond scored on an Almekinders assist and Almekinders scored a short-handed goal with 2:28 left in the period to make it 10-0 at the end of three.

At 11:42 of the final period Chapel Hill finally got on the board when Casey Leeper scored (don't know if that was assisted) to make it 10-1. At the 7:14 mark the teams were told to go into the locker rooms because of lighting. The fans were told to go to their cars. After about 20 minutes the game resumed, but with 2:16 left on the clock (at 9:04 p.m.) the game was called again because of lightning.

At 9:17 p.m., after the NCHSLA board had gotten weather reports and discussed the matter, the game was called and East Chapel Hill was declared the winner.

Mendes was named most valuable offensive player of the game and East's goalie, Wally MacGregor, was named most valuable defensive player.
