The Riverside Pirates, looking at times like world beaters and at other times like egg beaters, won their division in the 2006 UNC Holiday Showcase, defeating Old North State, Enloe, Piedmont LC, Williamsburg and Cardinal Gibbons.
Leading scorer on the day for Riverside was midfielder Bob Kercher with 16 goals and 5 assists, while attackman Doug Cook added another 15 goals and 4 assists. The two accounted for nearly 60 percent of Riverside's 53 goals on the day.
OLD NORTH STATE
The Pirates began the day with a 9 a.m. game against Old North State. Riverside pulled to a 4-0 lead by halftime and pushed that to 5-0 only a minute into the second half. Cook scored first on a Tim Woolley assist, then Kercher made it 2-0 unassisted. Kercher made it 3-0 on another unassisted goal at the 6-minute mark, followed by an unassisted goal by Cook to make it 4-0 at halftime.
Cook added another right after the second half began to make it 5-0. ONS got on the board at the 3:00 mark of the second half, but Riverside answered as Kercher scored on a Sam Cordones assist at 9 minutes and then Alex Spathis scored unassisted to make it 7-1.
ONS scored three unanswered goals between the 10- and 15-minutes marks to make it 7-4. Scoring was closed out as Woolley scored on a behind-the-back shot on a Kercher assist to make the final 8-4.
Riverside goalie Steven McGhee, playing the first half, had six saves for Riverside. Bryan Rooney, playing in goal in the second half, had three saves.
ENLOE
In the 9:50 game, Riverside met Enloe and was quickly behind 2-0 only four minutes into the game. Three unanswered goals by the Pirates, however, put Riverside up 3-2 as Kercher scored two unanswered and Spathis scored on an assist from Cook.
Enloe tied the game at 3-3 at the 10-minute mark, but Riverside answered with two (Kercher unassisted and Cook unassisted) to make it 5-3 Riverside. Enloe quickly added a fourth goal, followed by a Riverside goal by Clayton Abbott unassisted to make it 6-4 Riverside at the half.
Enloe made it 6-5 early in the second half, but then the Pirates ran off seven unanswered to make the final score 13-5. Scoring those seven were Cordones unassisted, Philip Tieszen unassisted, Cook unassisted, Colin Cash from Cook, Cook unassisted, Kercher unassisted and Cook unassisted.
McGhee, playing the whole game (Rooney filled in at goal for Enlow) had three saves.
PIEDMONT LACROSSE CLUB
For their 11:30 game the Pirates faced the Piedmont Lacrosse Club, quickly running to a 2-0 lead on a Cook goal on a Kercher assist and a Cordones goal on a Cook assist. PLC added a goal at tahe 7-minute mark to make it 2-1, but Riverside popped two more in the net as Cook scored on a Kercher assist and Tieszen scored unassisted at the 11-minute mark.
PLC scored with 3 minutes left in the half to make it 4-1, but Riverside's Spathis intercepted a goalie pass and scored unassisted to make it 5-2 at halftime.
The teams traded goal for the next few minutes. PLC added a goal early in the second half to make it 5-3, followed by a Cash goal on an assist from Dylan Britt to make it 6-3. But PLC added another quick one to answer, making it 6-4. Tieszen scored unassisted to make it 7-4, only to be answered by PLC to make it 7-5.
The goal trading ended there as Riverside scored three unanswered to make it 10-5 with eight minutes remaining. Kercher scored unassisted twice in that stretch, followed by another unassisted goal by Tieszen.
PLC scored two unanswered to make it 10-7 but the Pirates added to more to make the final 12-7. Kercher scored on an Abbott assist and Tieszen on a Mike Schwartz assist to end the Riverside scoring.
McGhee had one save in the first half and Rooney had two in the second half.
WILLIAMSBURG
Next the Pirates had to play a team from Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg, Va., which had already defeated Cardinal Gibbons 9-4 earlier in the day. Walsingham scored first but was answered as Cook scored on a Kercher assist to tie it at 1-1. Walsingham scored again to make it 2-1 but the Riverside ran off four unanswered to make it 5-2. Scoring in that stretch were Kercher, Tieszen, Cook and Cordones unassisted.
Walsingham scored at the 7-minute mark to make it 5-3 and began to press their attack. It took three saves by Riverside goalie Steven McGhee in a three-minute stretch to keep the Pirates up, but Walsingham finally put two in with 2 minutes left in the first half to tie the game 5-5. Only a coast-to-coast unassisted goal by Kercher put the Pirates into halftime with a lead, 6-5.
Walsingham scored in the man-up early in the second half to tie it at 6-6, but Woolley scored on a Cordones assist and then scored unassisted to make it 8-6 three minutes into the period. Walsingham made it 8-7 followed by an unassisted Kercher goal to make it 9-7. A two-goal answer from the Virginians, however, made it 9-9 at the 6-minute mark.
An Abbott goal on a Schwartz assist made it 10-9 Riverside, followed by an unassisted Kercher goal to make it 11-9 with 10 minues left in the half. Walsingham scored in the man-up with six minutes remaining to make it 11-10 and the Pirates managed to escape with a one-goal win.
McGhee had three saves in the first half and Rooney had one in the second half.
CARDINAL GIBBONS
This game began like a rout as Riverside ran out to 5-1 lead by halftime, with scoring coming from Cook (who was in a one-on-one with the Gibbons goalie and about to shoot with a Gibbons defenseman checked his stick from behind, only to see the ball bounce into the net rather than away from it), Cook again unassisted, Kercher unassisted on a left-hander, Cook from Kercher and Woolley unassisted.
Riverside made it 7-1 on an Abbott goal on a Cook assist and a low-to-high rocket from Kercher from 15 yards. But Gibbon wasn't finished. They scored four unanswered to make it 7-5 before Tieszen stole the ball from the Gibbon goalie at midfield and shot from there to an empty net to make it 8-5.
Gibbons, however, scored three down the stretch to tie the game at 8-8 as the horn sounded. Cook scored unassisted for Riverside four minutes into overtime for the 9-8 Pirate win.
Rooney had one save in the first half and McGhee had two in the second.

Kercher, Mendes signing big news at Md.
Bob Kercher and Tony Mendes featured on Maryland home page
Posted Nov. 20, 2006, 11:55 p.m.
We all knew that Riverside's Bob Kercher and East Chapel Hill's Tony Mendes signing with Maryland lacrosse was big news here, but it's also big news up in College Park and around Terp Nation. Both players' photos are currently featured on the Maryland lacrosse home page.
The page features the story on Maryland's 2007 lacrosse recruits.
Here's what the story says about Kercher:
Midfielder Bob Kercher (Durham, N.C./Riverside HS) is a dynamic midfielder who was a 2006 US Lacrosse High School All-American. Named to the North Carolina All-State team after scoring 36 goals and adding 26 assists for Riverside. Kercher also proved to be tenacious when the ball is on the ground, leading the Pirates with 153 ground balls. A two-time North Carolina Public Schools Lacrosse Conference first-team selection, Kercher is also a two-time member of Team Carolina. He finished second on Team Carolina this past summer to future teammate Anthony Mendes with 18 points on 14 goals and four assists.
Here's what they said about Mendes:
Midfielder Tony Mendes (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill HS) is one of the nation's top offensive threats and a 2006 US Lacrosse High School All-American. The lightning-quick Mendes started in 2004 as a freshman and helped lead the Wildcats to the state championship. The Wildcats also won the state title this past spring with Mendes being named to the first team all-state squad. Mendes was a second team all-state selection in 2005. A two-time member of Team Carolina, Mendes led the team in scoring in 2006 with 18 goals and 25 points and was selected to the all-tournament team at the Battle of the Beach Tournament. A two-sport standout, Mendes was also a three-year starter for the East Chapel Hill soccer team.

The Purple Team came back from a 9-7.5 deficit in the final quarter of Riverside's 2006 lacrosse alumni game to score 7 goals in the final period to the White Team's one goal to take a 14.5 to 10 win.
The unusual score was the result of a first period being played with the White team having no goalie. During that first quarter the White goal was turned upside down with the triangular bottom of the goal serving as the goal opening, and each score counting for half a goal and each assist during that period accounting for half an assist.
Leading the way for Purple was Doug Cook ('07) with six goals and one assist, followed by Cory Coffman ('03) with three goals and an assist. Also scoring for Purple were Bradley Shore ('99) with 2.5 goals and an assist, Joey Pietrantoni ('05) with two goals and an assist and Owen Ham ('03) with one goal and two assists. Bryan Rooney ('07) had 14 saves in goal for Purple.
Leading White in scoring was Jon Ham ('00) with three goals. Scott Gordon ('98) had two goals and an assist, Chris Fiefs ('02) and Colin Cash ('07) had two goals each, Jonathan Beck ('06) had one goal, Alvin Black ('06) had two assists and Russell Warren ('08) had one assist. Steven McGhee ('07) had nine saves in three quarters for White.
Purple jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first three minutes of the first period as Shore scored on a Cook assist and the Cook scored on a Shore assist (remember, each of these goals counted as a half a goal). Scott Gordon then tied it 1-1 at 9:41 on an unassiste goal for White, but another half goal (Cook from Shore) made it 1.5-1. That's when Beck scored unassisted at 5:11 and Jon Ham scored on a Warren assist for White to pull ahead 3-1.5. That lead would have been larger if not for two huge saves by Rooney on rocket shots by Feifs, both of which Rooney saved with his body.
White pulled to a 4-1.5 lead on a Feifs shot assisted by Alvin Black at 9:04 of the second period. But three more half-goals by Purple (Shore unassisted on a left-hander at 7:56, Shore on a Pietrantoni assist at 6:30 and Cook unassisted at 5:23) to make it 4.5-4 in Purple's favor. At the five-minute mark of the second period McGhee arrived and assumed goalkeeper chores for White, but the half-goal difference assured there would not be an overtime in this game.
Another Feifs goal on a Black assist put White up 5-4.5 with 3:55 left in the half, but an unassisted goal by Coffman with 43 seconds left edged Purple back into a lead 5.5-5 as the first half ended.
White outscored Purple 3-2 in the third period to give them an 8-7.5 lead over White after three periods. With 13:58 left in the running 15-minute quarter Pietrantoni put Purple up 6.5-5 with an unassisted goal, followed by a Cook goal on a Coffman assist to make it 7.5-5. But then White reeled off three unanswered. First Jon Ham rolled right around a high screen and scored unassisted, then Cash scored a garbage goal and then Ham scored again unassisted to make it 9-7.5 in White's favor as the final period began.
Purple came out hot in the final period, scoring two quick goals (Cook from Owen Ham at 14:20 and then Cook on a backhand shot) to make it 9.5 to 9. Cash then score in a Gordon assist to put White up 10-9.5, but that was the last goal White would score. Meanwhile, Purple ran off five straight. Coffman scored on an Owen Ham assist at 11:21, Cook scored unassisted at 9:33, Coffman scored unassisted after running around in front of the crease for what seemed an eternity, Ham scored unassisted at 5:16 and Pietrantoni scored the capper unassisted with 4:03 remaining to make the final 14.5-10.
On faceoffs for the day, Beck was 10 of 12, Pietrantoni was 12 of 24, Gordon was 5 of 13, Feifs was 1 of 3, Kyle Rooney was 0 for 2 and Jon Ham was 0 for 1.
Participating for Purple in the 2006 alumni game were Bradley Shore ('99), Blair Bordeaux ('99), Murray Forbes ('05), Doug Cook ('07}, Kyle Rooney ('07), Cory Coffman ('03), Owen Ham ('03), Eric Poston ('99), Joey Pietrantoni ('05), Clayton Abbott ('08) and Kyle Roone ('04).
Participating for White were Matt Weaver ('07), Steven McGhee ('07), Jonathan Beck ('06), Chris Feifs ('02), Colin Cash ('07), Nick Scroggs ('98), Scott Gordon ('98), Russell Warren ('08) and Jon Ham ('00).

RHS players lead North to State Game gold
Kercher, Woolley and Cook provide bulk of North's scoring power

Bob Kercher shoots against Triad |

Tim Woolley goes to the goal |

Doug Cook shoots a high one |
Posted June 24, 2006, 11:50 a.m.
The North team won the gold medal at the 2006 State Games on Sunday, June 18, with RHS players scoring every goal in an 8-7 defeat of the Triad team. Bob Kercher and Doug Cook each had three goals and Tim Woolley added the other two for North in the winning effort at Cary Academy.
It was the second nail-biter North played with Triad, having defeated them 11-10 in overtime in the quarterfinals the previous day. Riverside players accounted for eight of the 11 goals in that contest, with Cook scoring 4, Woolley 3 and Kercher 1.
In the championship game Triad scored first with Seth Crowell scoring on a Taylor Mendoza assist. North tied it at 1-1 when Kercher scored on a Tony Mendes assist. Cook added another one for North on a Chris Koller assist before the first period ended, with North up 2-1.
Triad took the lead on two quick goals in the second period, the first one by Crowell unassisted and the second on a Dave Lee from Matt Gleisner goal. Another Mendoza goal (didn't get the assist) later in the period made it 4-2 in Triad's favor.
It was at that point that Kercher turned the momentum almost single-handedly when he won three faceoffs in a row and either scored or assisted on the next three goals to put North into a lead. His first was an unassisted left-hander to make it 4-3, then an unassisted ripper to tie it at 4-4, and finally he assisted Cook to make it 5-4.
Triad fought back, however and tied the game 5-5 on an unassisted goal by Alex Porter just before halftime.
In the third period, North outscored Triad 2-1, with Cook scoring on a Koller assist and Kercher on a Mendes assist. Triad's lone goal in the period was by Mendoza in a man-up. The score was 7-6 North at the end of three periods.
In the final period each team scored once, ensuring the North win at 8-7. Mendoza scored another man-up goal on an assist from Porter to tie it at 7-7, but North's Woolley scored the winner unassisted late in the period to make it 8-7. The North's offense killed clock and the defense held Triad in check the rest of the way.
In goal for North, Riverside's Steven McGhee registered 5 saves in the first half, and Glenn Spell had 6 in the second half. For Triad, Scott Bowles had 7 saves in goal.
In the exciting quarterfinal game on Saturday, June 17, North also had to come from two goals down to defeat Triad. The score was 6-4 in Triad's favor at halftime before North got on its 7-5 run to win the game.
North had pulled ahead 8-7 by the end of the third period and were up 10-8 before goals by Mendoza and Derek Watts tied it at 10-10 and put it into overtime. After North's Brian Reynolds won the faceoff in OT Doug Cook scored on a Woolley assist to win that game.
Scoring for North was Cook 4/0, Woolley 3/2, Casey Leeper 2/2, Kercher 1/1, Scot Meyer 1/0 and Chad Goodwin 0/1. For Triad, scoring was Mendoza 3/0, Gleisner 2/0, James Van Dorn 2/0, Patrick Cavanaugh 1/0, Jordan Smith 1/0. (I missed the first Triad goal and all three assists; if anyone has that info I'll be glad to add it.)
Other Riverside players on the North squad were Matt Weaver anchoring the defense, and Clayton Abbott at midfield.
North was the only undefeated team over the course of the State Games lacrosse competition. They beat East 12-2 and West 6-3 on Friday, June 16; South 16-4 and Triad 11-10 (ot) on Saturday, June 17; and Triad 8-7 on Sunday, June 18, in the championship.

Beck named Academic AA, Smith wins a Tony Cullen Scholarship
Posted May 21, 2006, 6:50 p.m.
Riverside juniors Bob Kercher and Tim Woolley were named to First Team All-State on Saturday, May 20. Kercher was also named one of eight U.S. Lacrosse High School All-Americans. The announcements were made following the NCHSLA 2A/3A and 4A championship games at SAS Soccer Park on May 20, 2006.
In addition, senior Jonathan Beck was named a U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-American, and senior goaltender Brad Smith was named a recipient of a Tony Cullen scholarship, awarded to a player who plans to play lacrosse at a North Carolina college or university. Smith is going to play at St. Andrews Presbyterian College next year.
Kercher becomes the seventh different player to win All-American honors at Riverside. Six others have won it once and Chris Feifs won the honor twice. Scott Gordon was Riverside's first AA in 1988. He was followed by Tom Raspet in 2000, Feifs in 2001, Feifs and Kevin Raspet in 2002, Cory Coffman and Zach Brewer in 2003 and Joey Pietrantoni in 2005.
Smith becomes the second recipient of a Cullen Scholarship, following Murray Forbes who won one last year. Forbes is now playing at Queens University so his team and Smith's will meet many times in the next few years.
