After a sluggish first period for both teams, the Chapel Hill Tigers' powerful offense woke up and scored nine second period goals to put the Providence Panthers away early in the state 4A championship game at Duke on May 19, 2007.

Chapel Hill's Stephen Burns scores one of his five goals against Providence on May 19, 2007. Burns was named the offensive MVP for the state championship final game.
In a game that unfolded in an eerily similar manner to the early game of the day between Western Guilford and Charlotte Catholic, Chapel Hill led only 1-0 at the end of one period, the same slim lead that Western had against their opponent only two hours earlier. But, like Western's offense, the Chapel Hill scorers found their shots in the second period and never looked back.

The lone score in the first period was Michael Abrams' goal assisted by Stephen Burns. Burns would become the games offensive MVP with 5 goals and 3 assists. As the second period began, the Tigers shot from the gate with six unanswered goals to take a 7-0 lead. Scoring in that streak were Burns unassisted, Logan Corey on a Burns assist, Corey unassisted, Abrams unassisted, Will Scroggs unassisted and Burns from Corey.

The Panthers added a goal before halftime, as Braxton Deaver made it 10-2 at the midpoint break.

John Chipouras made it 10-3 as he scored unassisted at teh 10:44 mark of the third period, but the Tigers responded with four unaswered before halftime, with Burns scoring on a Chris Michell assist, Burns scoring on a behind-the-back shot on a Haus assist, Haus scoring on a garbage rebound unassisted and Corey scoring unassisted. That gave the Tigers a 14-3 lead with one period to go.

Michell made it 15-3 on an unassisted goal early in the final period, followed by a Scroggs goal on a Haus assist to make it 16-3 with 9:12 remaining in the game. The Panthers scored three over the final seven minutes as Deaver scored unassisted, Konner Scroggins scored unassisted and Adam Tompkins scored with 2:47 left to make the final score 16-6.

Chapel Hill's Chris McLaughlin was named the defensive MVP for the game. Chapel Hill goalies Ryan Montgomery and Matt Patterson again platooned the goalkeeping duties, with Montgomery handling the first half and Patterson the second. (I don't have the saves but both played superbly. I had 9 saves in the second half and 8 in the first, but I may have missed a couple.)

The Western Guilford Hornets dominated Charlotte Catholic in the 1A/2A/3A championship game at Duke on Saturday, May 19, using a 6-1 run in the second quarter to break the game open and cruise to a 12-7 win.

Western Guilford's Scott Bowles makes one of his 15 saves against Charlotte Catholic in the 1A/2A/3A state championship game on May 19, 2007. Bowles was named the defensive MVP for the game.
Western goalie Scott Bowles, the defensive MVP of the game, had 15 saves against Catholic, five of those in the first quarter, which Catholic dominated in time of possession but just couldn't get the ball past Bowles. Taylor Mendoza grabbed a groundball at midfield and raced downfield to score unassisted at 4:08 to give Western a slim 1-0 lead at the end of the first period.

It could have been a 2-0 lead as Patrick Cavanaugh, who would be named the offensive MVP of the game, seemingly scored with 1 second remaining, but the Western bench had signaled a timeout just before his shot and the goal was disallowed.

The Hornets reeled off six unanswered in the second period, with Nick Remmey scoring the first two, both unassisted, Mendoza scoring the next two unassisted and Cavanaugh scoring two unassisted goals in identical fashion, waltzing through the Catholic defense uncontested for two layups. Catholic scored two quick goals in the third period to pull it to 7-3 as Brendan Egan scored on a Mike Sawyer assist and Steven Banick scored on a Will Baker assist. But Western answered back two of its own as Cavanaugh and Saed Qunbar both scored unassisted to make it 9-3. Baker scored on a Michael Italiano assist to make it 9-4 at the 4:40 mark. The Western fans got a scare as Mendoza came out and had his ankle worked on by a trainer, but it seemed to be minor as he didn't stay out of the game long.

Both teams traded goals in the remaining minutes of the third period, with Western's Cavanaugh scoring unassisted to make it 10-4 and then Robert Price scoring for Catholic to make it 10-5 as the period ended.

Catholic scored at 8:18 of the final period to make if 10-6, but Western again answered the challenge with two goals, Qunbar from Mendoza at 7:59 and Qunbar unassisted at 5:30 to run it to 12-6.
