Chris Feifs to coach at UNC
Tar Heels tap RHS alum to be assistant coach |
Posted Oct. 7, 2009, 2:30 p.m.
Chris Feifs, a 2002 Riverside alum who matriculated at the University of Maryland after a year at the Naval Academy Prep School, and who became a co-captain of the 2007 Terrapins lacrosse team, has been named assistant coach of the UNC Tar Heels lacrosse team. Feifs had been assistant coach at the Virginia Military Institute since July of 2007.
Here is the release from the University of North Carolina:

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Chris Feifs, a former player at Maryland and offensive coordinator at VMI was hired Wednesday as a full-time assistant coach for the University of North Carolina's men's lacrosse program. UNC head coach Joe Breschi made the announcement of Feifs' hiring. He will take over for Greg Paradine, who left in July to become the head coach of the newly started men's and women's lacrosse programs at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
"I'm thrilled to welcome Chris Feifs to the Tar Heel lacrosse family," North Carolina head coach Joe Breschi said. "Having grown up in the state of North Carolina, Chris has a passion for the game and a tremendous desire to help the Tar Heels continue to build an outstanding overall program, both on and off the field.
"His ability to teach the game offensively, recruit stellar student-athletes and build strong relationships with the players he worked with at VMI were critical factors in my interest in having him join the staff. Chris' character and leadership ability clearly fit the vision I have for the Tar Heel lacrosse program."
Feifs recently completed his second year as Coach Jeff Shirk's top assistant at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va. On July 2, 2007, Feifs was named to the VMI staff as an assistant coach and in the summer of 2008, he was officially given the title of offensive coordinator. In 2008, the Keydets earned their first ever bid to the MAAC Tournament, reaching the tournament championship game. It was the first post-season conference tournament bid for VMI in 28 years.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to work at the University of North Carolina and give back to my home state. Coach Breschi and coach (Pat) Myers have been inspirational throughout the hiring process and have me looking forward to getting involved all aspects of the program right from the start. I begin my tenure in Chapel Hill with great excitement and anticipation," said Feifs.
Feifs comes to Carolina with the experience of having played in the Atlantic Coast Conference as an undergraduate. Feifs rounded out his playing career at Maryland where he served as the co-captain of the 2007 team.
Feifs was drafted in the 2007 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft when he was taken by the Boston Cannons in the draft's third round. He played for the Cannons under the leadership of Coach Billy Daye, a 1993 UNC graduate.
In May 2007, Feifs received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Maryland. He posted a 3.5 grade point average and was a three-time selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Feifs played for Coach Dave Cottle's Terrapins from 2004-07. He played in 35 games in his career. As a senior he started 14 of 15 games for the Terps and had 15 goals and four assists for 19 points. He scored four goals against Yale that season, including the game-winning goal and he also put up three goals against Johns Hopkins.
At 6-4, 240, he was an imposing midfield presence for the Terps. He was the first-ever recruit from the state of North Carolina for Maryland's program as he was from Durham and graduated from Riverside High School in 2004. He was coached by Jim Kirkley at Riverside where he was named a two-time high school All-America. He is the son of Helmuts and Betsy Feifs. Feifs has also spent the past five summers as a camp instructor for several top lacrosse camps on the East Coast.

The 2009 edition of the annual Riverside Lacrosse Alumni Game got off to an inauspcious start as no goalies showed up for battle of graduated Pirates. However, retiring Riverside Head Coach Jim Kirkley prevailed upon his son, Luke, who played baseball and not lacrosse when he was at Riverside (Class of '00), to put on the pads.
In the other goal was a contraption that reportedly was built by Eric Poston ('99) to practice placing shots. It's a vertical basketball rim with a net bag attached to it. The rim is on an adjustable base that allows you to place the rim anywhere in the goal mouth that you prefer. The object is to put a ball into the rim and bag on the run, not an easy thing judging from the attempts during the alumni game. In any event, the game got underway with Luke Kirkley in one goal and Poston's contraption was adjusted with the rim at about a goalie's head height.
The White team began the game facing the live goalie, and Purple had to contend with the basketball rim, which turned out to be a formidable foe. White jumped to a 6-0 lead by the end of the first period as no Purple player managed to hit the basket goal.
Kirkley, though he gave up six goals in the period, began with a bang. After winning the faceoff, former Terrapin Chris Feifs ('02) barreled down and took a power shot that made a loud whack! when it hit Kirkley. But there was no rebound and the ball did not appear to be in the net. Everyone was baffled until Kirkley shook his pads and the ball dropped to the ground, having lodged between Kirkley's pads and chest after the shot.
Four minutes later (in the 20-minute running-clock quarter) current Terrapin Bob Kercher ('07) scored unassisted to put White up 1-0. He did the same thing two minutes later to make it 2-0. Nine minutes into the game Evan Leekley ('99) scored on an assist from Sam Cordones ('08) to make it 3-0. Two minutes later Feifs assisted Owen Ham ('03) on a goal to make it 4-0. Feifs followed that with a goal of his own on a Leekley assist 12 minutes into the period to make it 5-0. Glenn Estacio, Riverside's head coach following Kirkley's retirement, scored unassisted at the 17-minute mark to make it 6-0.
Luke Kirkley registered four of his 10 saves in that first period. Also, fans got a look at one of the signature moves of Bradley Shore ('99) as he used his "swinging gate" move on Kercher to get an LBC right before the end of the period.
As the second period began, Purple, now facing a live goalie, scored first as Joey Pietrantoni ('05) scored unassisted 30 seconds in, making it 6-1. But White responded four minutes later as Kercher finally broke the unmanned goal's perfect stretch, putting a ball in the net to make it 7-1. Colin Cash ('05) and Scott Gordon ('98) added two more for Purple, making it 7-3 seven minutes into the period. Ham also put a ball in the basket 14 minutes into the period, taking an assist from Cordones as as he was all alone in front of the goal. Gordon's unassisted goal 17 minutes in made it 8-4 at the half.
Now it was Purple's turn to face the basket again. They did better in the third period than they had in the first, when they were blanked. Seven minutes into the period Andy Ross ('05) put one in the goal ring to make to 8-5. Feifs scored on an Anthony Howard ('03) assist right before the end of the period to make it White 8 and Purple 5.
Each team scored a single goal in the final period as the heat and lack of conditioning took its toll. Pietrantoni scored unassisted 12 minutes in to cut the margin to 9-6, and Feifs scored on an Estacio assist in the final seconds to make the final 10-6 in favor of the White team.
Scoring:
White: Chris Feifs 3g, 1a; Bob Kercher 3g; Owen Ham 2g; Evan Leekley 1g, 1a; Glenn Estacio 1g, 1a; Sam Cordones 2a; Anthony Howard 1a.
Purple: Scott Gordon 2g; Joey Pietrantoni 2g; Colin Cash 1g; Andy Ross 1g.

Coach Kirkley thanks the Page folks, who gave him a nice sendoff after the final game of his 17-year run at Riverside. Page Coach Evan Smith presented him with a jersey with '09 and his name on it, and the PA announcer gave a very nice recounting of his career and four state championships. The Battle of the Pirates, Riverside vs. Page, began in a downpour on May 5 and ended three days later. No, the guys didn't play for 72 hours. Instead, lightning and days of rain delayed the finish of this first-round NCHSLA tournament game until Monday, May 8.
In the end, there wasn't much drama in this game, as the Page version of privateers were up 6-0 before lightning struck on Friday, May 5, with 7:39 remaining on the second period. The game was delayed, but it soon became evident that the rain and crashing thunder were not going away, and it was postponed altogether.
When it resumed on May 8, the Riverside Pirates were still as sluggish as they were three days before, and the white-hot Page Pirates ran out to a 10-0 lead by halftime. It was 12-3 at the end of three periods, the Riverside guys having posted three goals in the final four minues of the period. Robert Walton scored twice, once unassisted and another on a Carson Sterling assist, and Brad Hinkle scored on a Ben Bortner assist. Riverside added one more goal in the final period when Peter Ratcliffe scored on a Sterling assist.
The protracted game was the last of Coach Jim Kirkley's career as Riversides head lacrosse coach. RHS fans and players certainly wish it could have had a better outcome, but the opponents lessened the pain of the loss with a very nice tribute to Coach Kirkley after the game.
Page Coach Evan Smith first presented Kirkley with a jersey with his name and '09 on it, and then the PA announcer gave a nice rundown of his 17-year career, his contribution to North Carolina high school lacrosse, his years as the commissioner of the North Carolina High School Lacrosse Association and his four state championships.
Riverside fans and players were joined by the Page fans and players in a standing ovation for the red-moustached coach known for flinging his hat and yelling "God bless America" when his players didn't do his bidding. Let it be known that with 1:07 remaining in the second period against Page, Coach Kirkley let his hat fly for the last time as Riverside's coach.
Riverside goalie Chris Spathis had 14 saves in the season's final game. The Page Pirates were led in scoring by Robert Aycock with 4 goals, Donny Joyce with 1 goals and 4 assists, and Philip Nahser with 2 goals and 2 assists. Page goalie Casey Barber had 9 saves in the game.

The Riverside Pirates got beaten by the Chapel Hill Tigers 12-6 on April 30 in Jim Kirkley's final home game as head lacrosse coach for the Pirates, but the mood during the game, before and afterwards, was upbeat and celebratory despite the loss.
The Pirates played much better in this outing against their rivals than they did in the previous game, but 7 goals by the Tiger's star middie John Haus made the difference for the Tigers as as the future Maryland Terrapin proved too hard to handle.
The Tigers scored first at 10:55 as No. 12 scored unassisted (sorry, don't have a roster). The Pirates tied it up at 6:19 when Grant Cullinan scored on a Carson Sterling assist. But the Tigers reacted quickly with three straight goals by No. 12 from 23 at 5:11, No. 18 at 4:27 and No. 23 at 2:20 to make it 4-1. Sterling beat two defenders with sneaky dodges at 1:48 to score unassisted and make the score at the end of one period 4-2.
The Tigers again scored three unanswered to open the second period, 18 from 12 at 11:50, 12 at 10:27 and 23 from 30 at 3:01. Sterling added an unassisted goal at 2:35 to make it 7-3 at the half.
A low, hard shot by No. 12 for the Tigers made it 8-3 at 5:55 of the third, but another unassisted score by Sterling, who again dodged two defenders to get to the cage, made it 8-4 at 4:39. Sterling's unassisted goal at at about the three-minute mark (sorry, can't read my writing on the time of that goal) made it 8-5.
That must have been too close for comfort for the Tigers because they scored two quick ones to bring their lead back to 5. 12 scored unassisted at 1:57 and 23 scored at :43. Another Sterling goal at :13 made it 10-6 at the end of three periods.
The Tigers added two in the final period to make the final score 12-6. Haus scored both of those goals unassisted.
Riverside goalie Chris Spathis had 16 saves in the game. On faceoffs, the Pirates won 13 of 21, Bortner winning 8 of 11 and Greer winning 5 of 10.
On hand for the game were a number of alumni players and parents. During the handshake, the PA system serenaded Coach Kirley with the Air Force Band's rendition of "Thanks For the Memories," and the Chapel Hill contingent surprised Kirkley with a rocking chair to use during his waning years.
Now the Pirates must wait to see if they make it into the playoffs.

Midfielder Bradley Shore (RHS '99) dropped by the chat with Coach Kirkley before the Northern game. Shore played on two state championship teams at Riverside. (Click here for a larger version) |
The Riverside Pirates defeated Northern 15-2 in Coach Jim Kirkley's penultimate home game as Riverside's head lacrosse coach on April 28. The Pirates were led in scoring by Carson Sterling, who had 4 goals and 2 assists. Peter Ratcliffe and Ben Bortner each added hat tricks in the game.
The impending retirement of Kirkley brought out at least one old-timer, as legendary Pirate midfielder Bradley Shore dropped by to congratulate his old coach on a stellar 17-year tenure at Riverside. The taled about old times briefly before the game began.
Northern was first to score, as Michael Rice scored unassisted at the 9:13 mark. That Northern lead didn't last long, however, as Joe Weitz scored on a rebound of a Sterling shot to make it 1-0 at 7:45. Then Peter Racliffe gave Riverside a lead it never relinquished 5:09 on a shot that went through Northern goalie A.J. Morrissey's legs. Morrissey had 15 saves in the game, but couldn't stop an equal number of shots from the Pirates.
Sterling made it 3-1 with an unassisted man-up goal at 1:14, and the first period ended with the Pirates up only two goals.
That slim lead evaporated quickly, though, as the Pirates ran off eight unanswered goals in the second period. At 11:14 Bortner scored after a takeaway at midfield, running all the way in for the unassisted goal. At 8:59 Sterling scored on quick-stick shot on a Brad Hinkle assist to make it 5-1, followed by a Michael Anspach goal on a Sterling assist at 6:53 to make it 6-1.
Sterling scored another unassisted goal at 6:42 to make it 7-1, Peter Ratcliffe made it 8-1 with a high-90 shot over the goalie's left shoulder, Weitz scored his second goal on a bouncer at 3:26, Anspach scored unassisted at 3:13 and Bortner scored on a Grant Cullinan assist at 2:58 to give the Pirates a comfortable 11-1 lead at the half.
The Pirates added three more in the third period to Northern's none to make it 14-1 after three periods. Scoring during that quarter were Peter Ratcliffe unassisted at 9:40, Sterling unassisted at 6:10 and Bortner on a Robert Walton assist. That goal was made possible by a Walton ground ball at the Norther end, as he ran 80 yards before passing to an open Bortner in front of the goal.
Both teams added one goal in the final period. Leslie Wickham scored his first varsity goal at 4:23 to make it 15-1 and Northern's No. 55, Jonathan ??? (sorry, don't have the last name) scored unassisted with 1:30 remaining to make the final score 15-2.
Pirate goalies Chris Spathis and John Austin combined for 5 saves, Spathis with 3 in the first half and Austin with 2 in the second. On faceoffs, Robert Walton had 12 wins and two losses, and Steven Greer had 3 wins and one loss.
Walton led in ground balls with 9, whole Jack Ratcliffe led in LBC's with 3.

Riverside's defense knocked dozens of Cedar Ridge balls loose on April 9 but the Red Wolves picked most of them back up, giving them a commanding lead in ground balls, but the short end of the scoreboard. The Pirate defense and goal play kept the Red Wolves from capitalizing on their hustle for loose balls. The Pirates were led in scoring by Carson Sterling, who had 5 goals and 2 assists. Robert Walton added 3 goals, Ben Bortner added 2, Joe Weitz and Michael Anspach added one each, and Peter Ratcliffe had two assists. Riverside goalie Chris Spathis had 11 saves against Cedar Ridge.

The Riverside Pirates must have been affected by the time change on the Sunday before playing Cardinal Gibbons because they seemed to have taken the field without setting their alarm clocks. The Pirates sleep-walked through the first few minutes against the Crusaders and found theselves down 4-0 before four minutes had passed in the first period.
Austin Hardy, Patrick Mueller, Camden Feldman and Brian Spellman scored those four for the Crusaders, the last one coming at the 8:52 mark. But a light went on or an alarm buzzed for the Pirates midway through the period as their defense stiffened and they managed to add a goal of their own in the first period when Ben Bortner scored on a Carson Sterling assist with 1:50 left in the first quarter, making it 4-1.
The Pirates scored two quick goals early in the second period as Brad Hinkle scored on a Bortner assist at 11:34 with the Pirates in the man-up, and Robert Walton scored on a rebounded shot at 9:44 to make it 4-3. The Crusaders answered with a goal by Mueller to make it 5-3, but Riverside's longpole Jack Ratcliff made it 5-4 when he got one of his record-setting 16 LBCs (subject to Coach Kirkley's review of the tape) and took the ball 80 yards for an unassisted goal. The Crusaders added two unanswered goals in the final minutes of the period (both by Feldman) to make it 7-4, but the Pirates' Peter Ratcliffe answered with a goal on an assist by Sterling to make it 7-5 with 35 seconds remaining in the half.
Riverside managed a single goal in the third period (Walton from Sterling) to the Crusaders' four (Matt Ensweiler from Feldman, 2 unassisted by Mueller, and Feldman unassisted) to make it 11-6. In the final period only one goal was scored, by the Crusaders' Mueller on an assist by Feldman, making the final 12-6.
If Ratcliff's 16 LBCs hold up, he'll pass Riverside's legendary midfielder Bradley Shore, who had 14 LBCs against Chapel Hill in the PAC-6 championship game on May 5, 1999.

Pirates' annual Mulch Day a success
More than 4,000 bags of mulch delivered in six hours |
Posted Mar. 12, 2009, 2:20 p.m.
The following is from the Mulch Madness Team:

Riverside players and parents wrangle pallets of mulch on the annual Mulch Madness delivery day on March 7, 2009
|
We would like to thank everyone for their help in making this year's Lacrosse Mulch Sale a great success. It was a true team effort and could not have been accomplished without the work and generosity of many individuals.
The players sold just under 4,200 bags of mulch, which were delivered within six hours this past Saturday (March 7). The time many of you spent on Saturday with your trucks and trailers, cars, and our big trucks allowed for a smooth delivery process. Many individuals helped in providing breakfast and/or lunch, running to get the pizzas, and providing drinks for what turned out to be a very hot day.
We appreciate the generosity that everyone showed. For the players, thanks for your work in selling and hauling the mulch to backyards and driveways around Durham.
The top selling players in each class were:
Senior: Jack Marshall (215 bag equivalent)
Junior: Joe Weitz (423 bag equivalent)
Sophomore: Thomas Tedder (220 bag equivalent)
Freshman: Ryan Pasca (193 bag equivalent)

The Pirates' 2009 campaign started with a bang on March 6 as they jumped to a 3-0 lead over the Northwest Guilford Vikings within the first four minutes of the game in Greensboro. Riverside's sophomore attackman Carson Sterling provided each of those goals, one of them a SportsCenter-worthy behind-the-back beauty. But the Vikings woke up and added 11 unanswered goals before Riverside could find the net again.
The Vikings added four more before the final buzzer to make the final score 15-4. Sterling had all of Riverside's goals in the game. For Northwest, Jack Gibbs had five goals and Jay Goldsmith added three goals and all of Northwest's five assists in the convincing win.
After Sterling's third goal at 8:48 of the first period, the Vikings scored six straight in the remaining minutes of the first period, three straight by Gibbs, one by Sager West, one by Evan Vroom and one by Goldsmith after he stole the ball in the Riverside end on a botched clear. The Vikings added three more in the second period as Goldsmith scored unassissted, West scored unassisted, and Goldsmith scored on an unlikely 15-yard shot that was defended about as well as it could by by Riverside's Jackson Marshall.
The Vikings' Mason Carper and Goldsmith make 11-3 before Sterling added Riverside's fourth and final goal of the night two-thirds of the way through the period. Carper added a garbage goal and Gibbs scored on a change-up to make it 13-4 at the end of three. Gibbs scored on a Goldsmith assist at 9:45 of the final period and No. 32 (not on the roster) scored the final goal for the Vikings at 1:11 of the final period.

Plans for next couple of weeks
Coach Kirkley gives details on the coming schedule |
Posted Feb. 27, 2009, 1 p.m.
The following is from Coach Kirkley:
The varsity scrimmages at Duke on Saturday kick off at 8:30 a.m. All players need to be there at 7:45. We will play four scrimmages, ending at 11. This is a fund-raising event for the Brain Tumor center at Duke, so there will be a $3 admission charge and raffle for lacrosse items. Coffee, drinks and food will be available for purchase.
Both of our away games next week are varsity only and are scheduled for 7 p.m. The schedule says 7:30 for the Friday game, but it will be at 7. That will get us home a little earlier for our big day next Saturday delivering mulch!!! The bus for the Tuesday game will leave RHS at 3:50. The guys should have healthy snacks/drinks for the trip. The bus on Friday will leave at 4:15. That doesn't mean the guys should be there at those times... that's what time the bus will be pulling out.
Then of course we have three home games the following week, including two JV/Varsity doubleheaders on Tuesday and Friday, followed by our annual contest with Annapolis Christian. That day is also the Booster Club Barbeque sale. It would be a great idea to buy lunch for the day and support the Booster Club. We have tickets available for the guys to sell.

Coaches hold parent meeting for 2009 team
Parents, players given info on upcoming season, spring-break trip |

Coach Jim Kirkley (center) addresses parents who gathered for the annual fall parents meeting in the RHS cafeteria.

Coach Jim Kirkley (center) is flanked by Assistant Coach Glenn Estacio (right) and JV Coach Mark Abbott (left) after the annual fall parents meeting.
|
Parents and players gathered in the RHS cafeteria on Sept. 30 for the annual meeting to hear Riverside Head Lacrosse Coach Jim Kirkley give some marching orders and general info for the upcoming 2009 season.
The first order of business was to introduce Glenn Estacio as Riverside's new assistant coach/offensive coordinator. Long-time RHS lax fans, of course, know Coach Estacio from his years in that same position until leaving after the 2003 season to go to Chapel Hill High School as head coach there, where he won three state championships in five years.
Coach Estacio will assist Coach Kirkley during the 2009 season and will take over as head coach for the 2010 season.
Other subjects mentioned at the meeting:
• Coach Kirkley told parents that usually freshmen don't get cut from the junior varsity team. He told them that he's had many freshmen surprise him with their development after looking not so great at the beginning.
• Some 75 students have signed up for lacrosse, he said. That's a lot of players, he said, so some will probably have to be cut before the season begins.
• Practice begins on Feb. 16, with the first game coming only two weeks and a day after that. Parents were told that even if the school takes a day off for conferences or for a snow day, there will still be practice.
• Eligibility, he told them, is based on a student's fall semester. If a player flunks two of four classes in the fall, he cannot play. Also, if a player misses more than 13.5 days in the fall semester, he cannot play. That includes suspensions. So, if a player gets a 10-day suspension and then is absent four more days, he's ineligible. This is pretty much non-negotiable with the school he said. But if someone breaks a leg or has a lengthy illness, there may be an opportunity to appeal the 13.5-day rule.
• Physicals: Players who play a fall sport can use their fall physicals. But players who played lacrosse last year and haven't had a physical since then will have to get a new one. A PDF of the official Riverside physical form can be obtained here.
• Communication: Coach Kirkley said he communicates mainly via e-mails, but also uses RHS Web page and on the RHS forum for announcements. He asked parents to pay close attention to those.
• Spring break: The team will go to DisneyWorld again for the 2009 spring break tour. They will leave the Monday after Easter and return the next Saturday morning. Efforts are being made to keep the price at $500 per person. The annual spring mulch sale will help pay for the charter buses. The trip includes a four-park pass.
• Battle at the Beach: RHS will take a 24-man team to the annual Battle at the Beach at Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach on Nov. 8. Cost is $100 per player and includes two nights in a motel.
• UNC Showcase: It's Dec. 13. Details later.
• Help wanted: Calls were made for stat girls, ad sales for the program, stadium PA announcers, timekeepers and videographers, and mulch sale help.
• Apparel: Those wanting to order RHS lacrosse apparel should fill out a forms and turn them in to Anne Abbott by Oct. 21. There is a form for t-shirts and sweatshirts (get a PDF here) and a separate form for jackets (get PDF here).
• Booster club: Parents were also urged to join the Riverside athletic booster club to ensure that the lacrosse program is represented adequately.
