Riverside downs J.F. Webb 13-3
Pirates overcome slow start to down Warriors |
Posted Apr. 6, 2011, 1:30 p.m.
After a lackluster first period, during which they scored only one goal, the Pirates caught fire and scored four goals in each of the remaining three quarters to run away with the win over the Webb Warriors from Oxford.
Scoring most of those goals against Webb was Brad Hinkle. He had eight goals in the game, setting a new single-game goal-scoring record for Riverside. Also scoring were Garrett Abbott with two goals, and Peter Ratcliffe, Jake Pennigar and Jonathan Titus with one each. Leslie Wickham had four assists, Mitchell Fagert had three, and Hinkle and Ratcliffe each had one.
With four starters sitting during this game, the offense sputtered early. The only score in the first period was a goal by Abbott on a assist. In the second period, however, the Pirates had four goals, Hinkle on a Ratcliffe assist, Ratcliffe unassisted, Pennigar on a Fagert assist and Abbott on a Hinkle assist, to get to the half-time break up 5-1.
The Pirates scored four more in the third period, all by Hinkle, with one assisted by Ratcliffe and another by Fagert. It was a similar story in the final quarter, with Hinkle scoring three goals (assisted by Wickham twice and Fagert once) and Titus scoring one unassisted to make the final score 13-3.
The Warrior scoring came in the final three periods, with Webb scoring one each the second, third and fourth quarters. Matt Knott scored unassisted in the second, scored assisted in the third (Landon Williams), and unassisted again in the fourth period.
Riverside goalie Joe Marchese had four saves on the night. Riverside had 38 ground balls and shot 41 times. In faceoffs, Riverside won 10 of 19 (Ratcliffe 5 of 6, Tyler Campbell 2 of 7, and Tyler Green 3 of 6.
Riverside's record is now 7-2. Webb's is 2-7.

The Riverside Pirates christened their new black headgear on March 29 with a win over the Northern Knights in the friendly confines of Lennie Wrenn Stadium at Riverside.
Mitchell Fagert, with 10 points in the game (4 goals, six assists) tied Greg Tate (RHS '98) in the most-points in a game category. The only RHS players to exceed 10 points are Evan Leekley (RHS '99) and Cory Coffman (RHS '03).
It took longtime Riverside fans a little while to get used to seeing RHS playing in black helmets in this game. The Pirates have worn white headgear since their first season in 1993, so they looked a bit like an opponent for a while. But when they went up 4-0 in the first 10 minutes of the first quarter, the fans knew who to root for.
Fagert put the Pirates up 1-0 on an assist from Brad Hinkle, then Peter Ratcliffe made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal. Leslie Wickham scored on a Fagert assist to make it 3-0, and Ratcliffe made it 4-0 as he waltzed through four Northern defenders to score right in front of the goal. His stick skills on that play led to a request by Northern for a stick check, but the refs found his crosse perfectly legal.
Northern broke the ice at 1:25 as Michael Rice scored on a Jonathan Williams assist. Fagert scored his second goal with only 17.6 seconds remaining in the period as he put a garbage goal into the net to make it 5-0 at the first break.
Jake Pennigar made it 6-1 early in the second period as he put a zinger into the top left corner on a Fagert assist. At 4:30 Northern scored its second goal as Riverside did something that's been a bad habit recently. They threw an errant pass on a clear that Northern's Williams intercepted and put into the RHS net from right in front of the goal to make it 6-2.
A Northern goal by Williams on an assist by Raphael Cuddahee, and an RHS goal by Ratcliffe unassisted made it 7-3 with 3:52 left in the first half, before a Riverside barrage of four goals in the last three minutes of the half. Carson Sterling hit the top right corner unassisted to make it 8-3 at 2:47, Michael Titus made it 9-3 on another Fagert assist at 1:16, Scott Levine made it 10-3 with 22.9 seconds left, and Sterling made it 11-3 with 4.9 seconds left in the half.
Riverside score four goals to NHS's two in the third period. Scoring for Riverside were Ratcliffe on yet another Fagert assist, Fagert on a Sterling assist, Jake Pennigar on another Fagert assist, and Fagert on a Sterling assist. The Knight scorers in the third period were Rice unassisted and Williams unassisted, making the score 15-5 at the end of three periods.
Riverside added one goal in the final period (Spencer Anderson from Adam Bortner), while Northern added three, all by Williams and all unassisted.
Riverside had 57 ground balls in the game, and 44 shots. Each team had 10 saves on goal. A.J. Morrissey had 10 for Northern, while Riverside's two goalies combined for 10 saves: Chris Spathis had 6 saves on 5 goals against in three quarters in the net, and Joe Marchese had 4 saves and 3 goals against in one quarter's work.
Ratcliffe led Riverside in GBs with 9, Kyle Anderson had 8, Fagert had 7 and Scott Levine had 5. Conner Bolen led in LBCs with 3. Riverside won 14 of 26 faceoffs, with Ratcliffe winning 7 of his 9 attempts.
Riverside's record is now 7-2. Norther is 2-3.

Posted Mar. 26, 2011, 1:30 p.m.
After two straight losses, the Pirates got back on the winning track when they traveled up U.S. 15 to meet the Roxboro Community School Bulldogs and came away with a 15-3 win.
Riverside's Carson Sterling tied the RHS record for assists in a single game with seven. He joins Greg Tate (RHS '98) and Evan Leekley (RHS '99) with seven assists in a game.
Scoring in the first period were Brad Hinkle from Sterling, Mitchell Fagert from Sterling, Michael Titus from Sterling, Sterling unassisted, Tyler Green unassisted, Hinkle from Fagert, Hinkle from Leslie Wickham and Hinkle from Sterling, and Hinkle from Sterling. The Pirates entered the second period up 9-0.
The Pirates added three more goals in the second period: Wickham from Sterling, Fagert from Sterling and Adam Bortner unassisted, making it 12-0 at the half. Riverside made it 13-0 in the third period as Jake Pennigar scored unassisted. A minute later Roxboro added its first goal when Matt Vilaro scored the first of his three unassisted goals.
Riverside added two more goals in the final period, one by Bortner unassisted and another by Peter Ratcliffe unassisted. The Bulldogs' Vilaro added two more unassisted goals in the final quarter to make the final score 15-3.
Riverside had 57 ground balls, 26 shots, and their goalies combined for 11 saves, Joe Marchese with 8 and 3 goals against, and Chris Spathis with 3 saves and 0 goals against.
Leading in ground balls for Riverside was Peter Ratcliffe with seven. Leading RHS in LBCs was Terrence Pruitt with five. Riverside won 8 of 22 faceoffs, with Ratcliffe winning 6 of his 7.
Riverside is now 6-2.

Riverside loses to Jordan 5-3
RHS falls behind early and can't catch up to Falcons |
Posted Mar. 25, 2011, 1:30 p.m.
For the second game in a row the Pirates found themselves scoreless in the first period, falling behind and never able to catch up. It was Hoggard six days earlier and the Jordan Falcons this time around.
The loss to archrival Jordan gave Riverside it's second loss in a row as its offense struggled to get into the net against another strong defensive performance by an opponent. Goals by Eric Carver, assisted by Sam Lindsey, and an unassisted tally by Connor Owen, gave Jordan a 2-0 lead at the end of 12 minutes.
The second period was even less eventful, with only one goal being scored. A rocket shot from 12 yards by Riverside's Jake Pennigar made it 2-1 at the half.
Riverside experienced another scoreless period in the third stanza, while Jordan managed to add two goals, one from Flynn Marron unassisted, and another from Gus Donner assisted by Alex Herst.
Riverside entered the final period down 4-1 and added two goals, but the four goals already on the board were enough for Jordan to gain the win, even without an insurance goal to make the final 5-3. Scoring for Riverside in that final period were Pennigar on a Carson Sterling assist, and Mitchell Fagert, also on a Sterling assist. Scoring for Jordan in the final quarter was Carver with 52 seconds remaining.
Riverside led in ground balls 31-22, and in shots 32 to 24. Both teams' goalies had 13 saves, Joey Shreyack for Jordan and Joe Marchese (5) and Chris Spathis (8) combining for Riverside's 13 saves. Peter Ratcliffe led RHS in GBs with five, while Kevin O'Foghludha led in LBCs with 5. Riverside won only 1 of 10 faceoffs in the game.
Riverside's record is now 5-2.

Pirates fall to Hoggard 4-8
Turnovers, sloppy play contribute to season's first loss |
Posted Mar. 19, 2011, 1:30 p.m.
Playing their second game in 24 hours, the Riverside Pirates looked less than tuned-up in their matchup against the Vikings from the coast, falling behind 5-2 and the half and never catching up.
Both teams began slowly, seemingly bottled up by the opposing defenses, but Hoggard struck first with a goal by Hunter Edens, his first of six on the night, assisted by Cameron Brown, at 5:03 of the first period. The Vikings bumped it to 2-0 on a 2-up extra-man opportunity when Edens scored again, assisted once more by Brown.
Hoggard went up 3-0 on another Edens score, this one unassisted, before Riverside got on the board with a Mitchell Fagert goal assisted by Leslie Wickham at 6:35 of the second period. Hoggard answered quickly with another Edens goal, assisted by Zack Holtz, to make it 4-1. Riverside scored in a 2-man-up situation of its own at 1:03 to make it 4-2, on an unassisted goal by Peter Ratcliffe.
It looked as if the Pirates would go into the halftime with a two-goal deficit, but an errant pass on a clear gave the ball to Hoggard's Rhett Naber who quickly passed to Holtz in front of the goal for a score with 7 seconds remaining, making it 5-2 Hoggard at the break.
Each team scored a single goal in the third period (Carson Sterling unassisted for Riverside and Edens from Holtz for Hoggard) to enter the final quarter with the Vikings up 6-3. Hoggard added two quick goals in the final period, Brown assisted by Edens and Edens unassisted after a stolen pass on a clear left him one-on-one with the RHS goalie, to make it 8-3. The Pirates tacked on one more as Sterling scored coming from behind the goal to make the final score 8-4.
Riverside's Sterling led his team in GBs with eight, while Kevin O'Foghludha led in LBCs with five. Ratcliffe won 9 of 11 faceoffs, while Tyler Campbell won 4 of 5. Riverside's goalie Chris Spathis registered 13 saves, while Hoggard's goalie had 6 on the night. In all, Riverside spent 11:30 with a man in the penalty box, one of those minutes with two out of the game.
Hoggard led in ground balls 25 to 18, and in shots 21 to 19. Riverside's record is now 5-2.

Posted Mar. 18, 2011, 1:30 p.m.
The Riverside Pirates journeyed to Oxford on March 17 to take on the Webb Warriors and came away with a convincing 12-1 victory.
The Pirates scored 10 points in the first half to take a 10-0 halftime lead and were never in jeopardy. They scored two insurance goals in the final half for the win.
Carson Sterling led the points for Riverside with two goals and three assists. Brad Hinkle added three goals, and Spencer Anderson also added two. Scoring one each were Peter Ratcliffe, Michael Titus, Leslie Wickham, Mitchell Fagert and Adam Bortner. Ratcliffe also added two assists, while Scott Levine and Fagert had one assist each.

Riverside beats Cedar Ridge 11-5
Sterling scores 6, Hinkle 4 to lead Pirate scorers |
Posted Mar. 10, 2011, 1 p.m.
The Riverside Pirates, coming of two big wins in a row in games where they could have been considered the underdogs, entered the contest with Cedar Ridge on March 8 as the clear favorite. After a 4-0 first period it became clear there would be no letdown after wins over East Chapel Hill and Broughton the previous week, and the Pirates cruised to an 11-5 win.
Pirate leading scorer Carson Sterling scored twice unassisted in the first period, as did Brad Hinkle, with Hinkles two scores assisted by Scott Levine and Sterling. Riverside went up 5-0 early in the second period on a Levine unassisted goal, which was answered by Cedar Ridge's Brandon Phares three minutes later. Sterling then scored unassisted to make it 6-1, but the game Red Wolves added another before the half when Robert Moore scored unassisted to make it 6-2 at the break.
The Pirates added four more in the third period to just two for the Red Wolves. Hinkle scored on a Mitchell Fagert assist, Sterling scored on an assist from Peter Ratcliffe, Sterling scored unassisted with a shot right over the goalie's head and he scored again on a Fagert assist with 5:46 left in the third period. Cedar Ridge's Michael Mastriani and Jeffrey Williams scored in the period, with Williams' goal assisted by Moore.
Hinkle made it 11-4 midway through the final period on an assist from Fagert, and the Red Wolves added the game's final goal just a few seconds later when Isiah Davis won the ensuing faceoff and raced downfield to pass to Williams, who was wide open in front of the Riverside net.
Riverside's Chris Spathis and Joe Marchese each had 5 saves in goal. Cedar Ridge's Stephen Tanner had 11 saves. The two teams split faceoffs 8-8. Riverside led in ground balls 48-37, and led in shots 36-13. Sterling led Riverside in ground balls with 8. Mike Evans led in LBCs with 7.
Riverside is now 4-0 for the first time since the 2002 season. For the record, the 2002 Pirates began the season 8-0 before losing to Durham Academy in the ninth game of the year.

Pirates defeat Broughton 4-3
Riverside jumps to 3-0 lead and holds on for the win |
Posted Mar. 6, 2011, 9 p.m.
The Riverside Pirates journeyed to undefeated Needham-Broughton on Friday night, March 4, and came away with a 4-3 win.
The Pirates jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and held on for the win. Riverside went up 4-2 early in the third period, and the Caps could only add one more goal, that one coming late in the third period. Neither team managed a score in the final period.
The scorebook copy that I have is hard to read, but it looks as if Mitchell Fagert had two goals, Michael Titus and Peter Ratcliffe each had one, and Carson Sterling had three assists. The Broughton scores, according to my copy of the book, were all unassisted, two by Mitchell Dupere and one by Wilson Purcell.
Riverside goalie Chris Spathis had 11 saves, Broughton's Johnson (sorry, can't read the first name) had 4. Riverside led in ground balls 26-17 but trailed in shots 15-25. The Pirates led faceoffs 7-6.
Ratcliffe led Riverside in ground balls with 7 while Kevin O'Foghludha led in LBCs with 4. Riverside's record is now 3-0 for the first time since the 2002 state championship season.

RHS downs East 11-10 in overtime
Pirates lost their lead twice but rallied for the OT win |
Posted Mar. 5, 2011, 1 p.m.
Riverside defeated East Chapel Hill for the first time since 2006 on March 3, taking a hard-fought win 11-10 as Mitchell Fagert scored with 18 seconds left in the first overtime period on an assist from Leslie Wickham.
The Pirates seemingly had the game sewed up as they had a two-goal lead with only four minutes left in regulation. But sloppy ball handling by the Pirates, and with the Wildcats ready to take advantage, Riverside saw a 10-8 lead dwindle to 10-9 with 39 seconds left.
The Pirates' Tyler Campbell won the faceoff and Riverside called time out with 24 seconds left. All they had to do was kill the clock for the win, but an errant pass resulted in an East ground ball that led to a fast break and a tying goal by Wildcat Leo Moran with 11 seconds left in the game.
In overtime, the all-important faceoff was won by Riverside's Peter Ratcliffe. The Pirates' passing was better this go-round as they controlled the ball for the entire overtime, except for a 10 second period. East never threatened in the OT and the Wickham-to-Fagert combination put the game away as the four-minute overtime was ending.
Timely defense and faceoff wins, plus a 21-save performance by Riverside goalie Chris Spathis helped ensure the win.
The scoring began at 11:13 of the first period when Riverside's Carson Sterling scored unassisted for the first of his five goals. East answered at 11:06 when Moran scored unassisted to tie the game 1-1.
East took the lead at 2-1 at 10:18 when Baxter Perkins scored on an assist from Steven Augustine. Riverside struck back at 8:41 to tie it on another Sterling unassisted goal, and then the Pirates took the lead at 3-1 when Ratcliffe scored on a Wickham assist to make it 3-2.
The Wildcats tied it at 3-3 when Ryan Lucey scored unassisted at 3:04, ending the first period scoring with the game knotted up.
The Pirates came out hot in the second period, scoring two unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead. The East defense had no answer for Sterling's flashy moves as he seemed to get inside at will. After a Ratcliffe faceoff win, Sterling scored unassisted at 10:57, followed by a Fagert unassisted goal at 10:33, after another Ratcliffe faceoff victory.
At 9:02 East cut the lead with an extra-man unassisted goal by Chandler Zirkle, followed at 3:30 with another Zirkle goal, this one assisted by Augustine, that tied the game at 5-5 by halftime.
The teams traded goals the entire third period. RHS went up 6-5 at 11:36 (another faceoff win by Ratcliffe) on a Fagert goal assisted by Sterling, then East tied it at 6-6 on a Moran-to-Lucey goal at 8:33. Riverside made it 7-6 at 7:54 on a Scott Levine goal on a Fagert assist, but East's Moran tied it again at 7:35 on an unassisted goal. East took the lead for the second time in the game at 5:40 as Zirkle scored on a Lucey assist in an extra-man situation, but RHS tied it at 5:21 with their own extra-man goal by Ratcliffe, assisted by Fagert.
The final period began tied at 8-8, and Riverside looked headed to a sure win when they scored two unanswered goals, both unassisted by Sterling, one at 11:12 and another at 4:04. The defense came up strong during the early final period, killing off two one-minute penalties without an East score.
Time was dwindling away. With a minute left, Riverside still held a two-goal lead. But at 39 seconds Augustine scored on a Zirkle assist after some careless passing by Riverside tomake it 10-9. In the ensuing faceoff, which was won by Campbell, East's faceoff man, Augustine, was injured in a scrum for the loose ball.
There were some tense moments as he lay on the field for some minutes before coming off the field with assitance and to the crowd's relief and applause. An ambulance took him away and word is he is fine after a night's observation in the hospital.
Riverside called a timeout with 24 seconds remaining, but quickly lost the ball on a low pass. East took advantage on a fast break that led to Lucey's tying goal with 11 seconds left in regulation.
Riverside kept the ball for most of the overtime, with the ball never crossing midfield into Riverside territory. The Pirates lost the ball only briefly at 1:26, but got it back quickly as a Riverside defender had a timely LBC and a teammate scooped up the ensuing ground ball.
With the clock winding down, Wickham passed to Fagert from behind the net and Fagert put it in on the goalie's right side for the win, giving Riverside a 2-0 season start for the first time since 2006.
In the JV game that preceded the varsity match, East defeated Riverside 10-7. Scoring for Riverside were (sorry, don't have a roster) No. 11 with 3 goals and an assist, No. 12 with 1 goal and an assist, No. 25 and No. 8 each with 1 goal, and No. 15, No. 17 and No. 12 each with an assist.

Riverside made it 3-1 at 11:24 of the second period on a Wickham goal assisted by Sterling. Carrboro pulled to within 1 goal at 7:40 on an Alex Knapp goal to make it 3-2. Riverside's Michael Titus scored at 6:09 on a Sterling assist to give the Pirates their two-goal cushion again 4-2.
Peter Ratcliffe made if 5-2 at 2:35, but the Jaguars' Sam Stargel scored with 34 seconds left in the half to make it 5-3 at the break.
The Jaguars were held scoreless in the third period as Riverside added two goals. Sterling scored unassisted at 11:31 and Hinkle scored on a Fagert assist at 8:06 to make it 7-3 after three periods.
